Though you don’t like Spirit, they have many dates in Sept from NYC-FLL for $74 Round Trip (If you buy it at the airport to avoid the passenger usage fees)
That’s the same price you’d have to pay me to try Spirit and their 28″ seat pitch 😉
Don’t forget that if you buy at an airport to save the online booking fee, you don’t qualify for the discounted checked/carry-on baggage rate.
I flew them recently one-way for a quick weekend trip (no carry on or luggage) and I was thankful they were on time and didn’t have any issues. The toughest part is (as you mentioned) their legroom and the extreme seat discomfort and narrowness (I’m a male 5’8, 175 lbs). I was thankful to take Jetblue on the return home.
If I take Spirit again I’d only consider the Big Front Seat (for $70 RT), and would likely take an early morning 6AM flight to avoid infamous delays and cancellations.
