Today Only: Book United Awards From Just 3,000 Miles

Click on the link above to find flight deals from just 3,000 miles or $29 in basic economy. United doesn’t have basic economy awards, so even with a 3K award, you still get regular economy benefits.

Valid for travel purchased today for travel from 2/9-5/26.

You can change awards for free, though you will pay the difference in miles. You can also refund awards if cancelled 30+ days before the flight (and obvious workarounds are obvious).

For example, a flight from Cleveland to Chicago on 5/23 is on sale for $49 in basic economy or $70 in economy. It’s also bookable for 3,000 miles, a value of 1.45 cents per mile compared to basic economy or 2.15 cents per mile compared to regular economy. Plus, the mileage ticket and taxes paid are fully refundable, while the paid ticket can only be refunded to a voucher.

Or as Nick points out, this is also useful for United’s Excursionist Perk that allows for a free one-way flight within any flight region, though this is less useful in the COVID era due to border closures.

But to book that, you need to use the multi-city search to book a 2 flights within a single region and then you can book a free one-way within any other region sandwiched in between your flights.

For example if you book a round-trip from Cleveland to Chicago for 6,000 miles you can add in a free Excursionist Perk flight anywhere else in the world in between your flights, such as onboard the United Island Hopper from Palau to Kosrae via Guam, Chuuk, and Pohnpei, a flight that costs $598 or 12.5K miles on its own:

Or if you book a one-way flight from Cleveland to Chicago and then Chicago to Kansas City for 6,000 miles you can add in a free Excursionist Perk flight anywhere else in the world in between your flights, such as Johannesburg to the Seychelles, a flight that costs $473 or 19.5K miles on its own.

Will you book any awards with this sale?

what are the workarounds to change ya flight that is less than 30 days away…please share

    • Dan

You can change for free at anytime.

Booked a flight using miles at the reduced rate. Tried changing the dates online, and they want me to pay the difference in mileage fares (both saver awards)

        • Dan

Change fees are free, not the difference in fare

I’m tryna figure out how do you get to and from the Excursionist Perk cities.

    • Dan

You would need a separate ticket, but this would make for a free flight within that region.

Are these the regions? Are there any others?

    – North America.
    – Latin America. Caribbean. Central America. South America
    – Europe. Middle East. Africa.
    – Asia and Pacific.

Tickets for Pesach from Newark to LAX are available for 4.5k points each way direct flights

Does the Excursionist flight (in the middle) need to be from a different city than either the outbound or return? I’m trying LAX-SFO + BOS-LAX + SFO-LAX and it’s charging for each leg.

    • YOCHAI

      Read the post?
Middle flight has to be in a different region

  7. zow

Disregard prior post. I now see that “The Excursionist Perk cannot be in the MileagePlus defined region where your travel originates. (For example, if your journey begins in North America, you will only receive the Excursionist Perk if travel is within a region outside of North America.)”

In order to fly the free excursionist flight, do you have to fly the first leg? ( ORD -CLE in the example)

      Have the same question.

Looking to snag a cheap flight via excursionist from Ewr- Fll/pbi… 02/11

      Any suggestions?

” (and obvious workarounds are obvious).” But you still need to pay the difference in miles? If what you are changing it to is more? Can you pay the difference in cash? and can you change it to someone elses ticket?

  10. L

How can you get the flight refunded if it’s booked for a flight in less than 30 days and you need to cancel- mileage ticket?

Is there a website that will allow me to simply input my place of origin and the website will suggest destinations and also allow me to filter the results based on price?

For example, if one day I decide that my kids haven’t been on an airplane in a while, I’ll go to the website, input JFK (the closest airport to my house) as the location of origin and the website will suggest destinations that I can then filter based on cheapest price, find a flight, book it, go and comeback.

I was hoping to keep booking till 3am – seems that the deals just ended. Got in a few which I will probably end up cancelling 😉 – thanks though for the heads up

    • Dan

Works based on the time at the departure city, so LAX flights would be valid until 3am EST.

Is it an issue in the United system if I have the same return flight route (everything booked one ways) booked for both a Monday night and then the next night as well? Need some time closer to flight (>30 days) to figure out which one. Thanks!
