American has dirt cheap basic economy fares from the US to Tokyo. These fares include a free checked bag and carry-on bag, but they can’t be changed.

That’s a gamble, as currently Japan is closed to tourists, though you can try buying for after you think they will reopen.

Or you can buy up to an American standard economy ticket for an additional $80 round-trip, which comes with free changes and seat selection.

United is also offering a standard economy fare for $305.

Japan is one of my favorite countries to visit and there are even kosher restaurants there! Here is the DDF Master Thread on Japan travel.

American Miami or Fort Lauderdale-Tokyo $225 sample dates:
October 5-12
October 12-19
October 19-26
November 2-9
November 9-16
November 16-23
November 23-30
January 18-25
January 25-February 1
February 1-8
February 8-15
February 15-22
February 22-March 1
March 1-8

Fares are also available from other cities to Tokyo. For example:
S. Louis-Tokyo for $279 on AA in basic/$359 in standard economy
Cleveland-Tokyo for $357 on United in standard economy

Using Chase Points:

You can pay for the ticket with “hybrid points” such as AMEX or Chase points with a card that allows your points to be used at an increased value for airfare in addition to be able to transfer points into airline miles.

If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve card you can redeem points for 1.5 cents each towards travel. If you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Ink Preferred you can redeem points for 1.25 cents each towards travel.

You can login to your account and redeem Chase points for travel here. The round-trip cost will be 15,044 points with a Sapphire Reserve. That rate include all taxes and you will still earn flight miles as well!

Ain’t flying so long in economy even for free….

    • Dan

Can upgrade with miles or a systemwide upgrade cert.

      • Abey

Worth pointing out, basic Econ can’t be upgraded. Regular Econ would be 25 k for the upgrade

      • Nadav

Dan, how much in miles+cash would it cost to upgrade from basic economy or economy to business one-way?

  2. Nirc

If I buy up an standard economy ticket which includes free changes, do I need to pay the difference if new ticket has higher fare?

  3. Winger13

Nope, even if vaccinated, not find this at the moment. Why expose yourself to the risk of sitting in a plane that long during a pandemic? Stupid

    • VaccinatedShmaccinated

What risk? Risk of blood clots? Sore back? Choking on mediocre, pandemic-friendly airplane food?

    • Al

Hate to break it to you, but there are a zillion other bad things that could happen to you while traveling that are much more likely than catching a virus which, if you are even halfway healthy and/or under 90 yrs. old, you probably wouldn’t even know you had unless you were tested. lol. If 100% safety is your standard for traveling, you’re not going anywhere. Ever. Get a grip and stop being manipulated by CNN and Fauci.
