Star Alliance carrier TAP Portugal has business class fares from US cities to Israel via Lisbon in business class from just $1,053!

However there are caveats:

  • The TAP A321neo over the Atlantic has lie-flat business class seats, but the A320 between Lisbon and Tel Aviv is Euro-business that is a coach seat with a blocked middle seat.
  • You are allowed to make one free change, but the difference in fare will apply.
  • There is an overnight connection in Lisbon required on the return from Tel Aviv. Europe plans to open to vaccinated Americans in time for the summer travel season, but that isn’t a guarantee that will happen. If it doesn’t open, you’ll have to remain in the terminal overnight.
  • Alternatively, you can gamble that Europe will open and schedule a free stopover in Lisbon to change the overnight stopover into a bonus trip there.
  • Samples below are from Newark, but flights may also available from Boston, Chicago, Miami, and San Francisco.
  • Sample Newark-Tel Aviv $1,049 dates
    • July 4-12
    • July 20-27
    • July 25-August 3
    • August 1-10
    • August 8-17
    • August 22-31
  • Sample multi-city Newark-Tel Aviv $1,049 dates with a free stopover in Lisbon:
    • Newark to Tel Aviv July 4, Tel Aviv to Lisbon July 12, Lisbon to Newark July 15.
    • Newark to Tel Aviv July 20, Tel Aviv to Lisbon July 26, Lisbon to Newark July 28.
    • Newark to Tel Aviv July 25, Tel Aviv to Lisbon August 2, Lisbon to Newark August 5.
    • Newark to Tel Aviv August 1, Tel Aviv to Lisbon August 9, Lisbon to Newark August 12.
    • Newark to Tel Aviv August 22, Tel Aviv to Lisbon August 30, Lisbon to Newark  September 2.

If you fly round-trip from Newark to Tel Aviv on this TAP J class fare you will earn 23,554 Air Canada miles, Aegean miles or Lifemiles (200% flown miles), or 17,667 Turkish miles (150% flown miles), or 14,721 United miles, ANA miles, or Singapore miles (125% flown miles).

TAP Portugal also has business class on sale from the US to other cities in Europe via Lisbon or Porto. You can also book a multi-city trip to get a free stopover in Lisbon or Porto.

Using Chase Points:

You can pay for the ticket with “hybrid points” such as AMEX or Chase points with a card that allows your points to be used at an increased value for airfare in addition to be able to transfer points into airline miles.

If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve card you can redeem points for 1.5 cents each towards travel. If you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Ink Preferred you can redeem points for 1.25 cents each towards travel.

You can login to your account and redeem Chase points for travel here. The round-trip cost will be 71K points with a Sapphire Reserve. That rate include all taxes and you will still earn flight miles as well!

Just to confirm, That currently, there is no issue with flying through Lisbon, as long as one does not leave the airport?

  2. Sam

So if I redeem 71K Chase points for this to Israel, I’ll earn back 23,554 Air Canada miles?!?

  3. Todd

You should specify this is only ex EWR, not blanket US… not ALL your readers live in NY or CLE…

      • Todd

I read the post, you said MAY be available from other cities but did you actually bother to check??

        • Dan

          I did, did you?
It’s not practical to to find samples from every US city to every city in Europe/Israel. Would make the research time for one post go from an hour to 10 with diminishing returns as more than 50% of our traffic is from NYC metro.

          • Todd

If you checked as you say, then you admit to writing US instead of EWR despite knowing that there are no flights available from the cities you mentioned. Otherwise, you would have put those sample dates in as well. (I checked SFO, MIA, ORD within minutes of your tweet going out.)
I thought this was an honest mistake of location bias, but your responses now make it seem more like this was deliberate clickbait…

          • Dan

I did and they are also available on select dates with longer layovers. Not all US cities are available to all European cities, hence may be available.
            Cheers!

          • Mdde

Dan – you are exceptionally kind and patient!! Keep up the great work

          • Jak

            Oh shush

            Dan’s the man!

  4. Chaya

I’d like to go to israel from lax end of june to visit my parents Israeli citizens. Will I have trouble flying with stopover through Europe. My husband and I are vaccinated. Can I book tickets now or should I wait

    • Dan

You can fly, but beware that if Europe doesn’t open you may get stuck in the terminal during connections, delays, or cancellations.
      Plan accordingly.

  5. Uri

Are economy tickets on sale too?

  6. Chaya

Should I rather book elbal direct what do I need to get into Israel thanks dan

  7. Chaya

I am not looking to leave the airport just stopover is cheaper which country do you think is best to go through

  8. dave

Hi but from ORD they fly A330 neo which has better biz class

  9. Mark

Is it available starting the trip in tlv?

  10. marko

wish i had the time to take advantage of deals like this and make the overall journey a lot of fun, including intentional longer stop overs… perhaps at a later stage in life.. thanks Dan for sharing.

  11. BT

    Any Jewish community/kosher in Lisbon?

  12. Michael

They stopped flying the 321-neo to TLV from Lisbon? When they launched the route that’s what made it so appealing.

  13. Murray Brand

I will not fly TAP again. There is a hidden charge for luggage that the customer does not find out until they arrive at the check in counter. Fly with any other airline. You are not getting any bargain with TAP

    • Yochai

“Hidden”? They specifically sell a few levels of tickets with the lowest not including bags. It’s usually only a few bucks more for a fare that includes bags.
Unfortunately, this has become common with many airlines recently.
Just read the fine print before you book.

  14. Susan

I have TAP vouchers from last summer. Any option to use them for this deal?

  15. Dovid Chesner

WARNING: DO NOT TAKE TAP AIRLINES! MY FAMILY AND I GOT REALLY MESSED OVER THROUGH THIS AIRLINE. THEY CHANGED OUR FLIGHT 3 TIMES AND THE 3RD TIME, THEY CHANGED IT FOR A MONTH LATER THEN OUR ORIGINAL FLIGHT. WE TRIED TO GET OUR MONEY BACK AND THEY SAID ONLY IN 3 MONTHS. IF YOU LOOK ON FACEBOOK AND LINKED IN ECT… YOU WILL SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE GOT SCREWED FROM TAP JUST LIKE US AND ARE STILL WAITING FOR REFUNDS FROM A YEAR AGO. THIS WAS A HUGE HEAD ACE FOR US BECAUSE ALL OUR PLANS GOT MESSED UP AND WE NOW HAVE TO COME UP WITH MORE MONNEY TO BUY NEW FLIGHTS FOR OUR FAMILY.

  16. CM

What are the travel restrictions for entering Israel from US at this point?

    • Dan

For now a first degree relative+vaccination or recovery record is needed.

The plan is to open for all vaccinated or recovered soon.

  17. Yisroel

Anyone know the return dates for this deal

    • Dan

Have you filed an informal and/or formal DOT complaint?

  18. Yisroel

Hi Dan Im trying to book this now for Auguset 8th or 9th not getting the rate of 1080 checked on TAP and priceline any reason why its not working?

  19. Chaya

I am a first degree relative can my husband go with me?

  20. Ariel

Word of warning, TAP was extremely difficult last year to get a refund from after they cancelled my flight due to Covid-19. Hopefully that has changed (finally got it after filing a CFPB complaint).

    • David Chesner

Can you explain to be how to file a CFPB? They also messed me over

      • Ariel

Go to CFPB website- submit a complaint. Did you use cash or points? Have you disputed the charge with the CC? (CFPB probably more effective if the compliant is directed against CC or points program operator but you can try it against TAP). Typically file DOT complaint against TAP and CFPB against CC or points program if they refuse to reverse the charge/credit back points.

  21. Refundable

Which airline would fully refund w no reason ? (Need to see if work schedule allow later on )
Cash ticked or miles cancel within 10 days of depart
Anyone would fully refund or credit
    No penalty?

  22. Aaron

Dan, do you know what’s the cancellation policy on these flights?

I purchased last night, but am on the fence if I should keep or cancel within 24 hours given all the uncertainty (both to enter Israel and Portugal where I am forced to overnight each way)

I’m getting confusing info from priceline and Tap

(the free flight change seems useless since the difference in fare will likely be more than the cost of this ticket)

    So would appreciate your input!

    Thanks!

  23. Chaim

Are these available for flights originating from TLV?

  24. Jeff
