Marriott introduced off-peak and peak pricing yesterday.
If you previously booked an award, you should check on the current pricing. If it’s now cheaper and the cancellation policy allows for cancellation, you should cancel and rebook your award.
I took a look at award pricing for several hotels. On the whole, peak and off-peak dates seem fairly balanced. Once a month Marriott, will adjust which dates are considered peak, standard, and off-peak at every hotel. I’ll try to make more posts in the future to see if Marriott keeps this balance after future peak date adjustments.
Peak award pricing certainly hurts as hotels are now priced higher in both points and cash when most people want to go there. That means there is less value to be had in the program. On the other hand, off-peak pricing means it can now make sense to use points when rates go down, which is nice as well.
Note that if you redeem for a 5 night stay that includes different point levels, you will only get the lowest point level night for free.
You can earn Marriott points on cards like:
- Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Consumer Card
- Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card
- Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card
- Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bold Card

What are your thoughts on Marriott dynamic pricing?
Too confusing to be loyal to Marriot and their credit cards – happy to have moved on
Marriott made the decision easy when they cut SPG AMEX earnings by a third.
Im happy that if Im flexible I can get the place for cheaper now!
To a certain extent.
If you dont like go on vacation when most people are going, there is terrific value in this.
It’s still more expensive than it was before they raised the properties to category 8.
How does it compare that to the cash price?
I think the future is hotels and airlines charging a lot more points as the years go on. At some point it will just make sense to go back to 2% cash back.
So true.
Little value to he had from points most days just equal to 2% cash back when looking at earning these points by CC spend.
How is that so true?
You should be earning either 1.5 or 2 points per dollar everywhere and up to 5 points per dollar on select categories. Should be far more valuable than 2%.
Agree on category, chase 1.5 is on personal not on buisness cc, I never had an issue but recently saw that someone got a letter regarding this.
It’s a longer discussion but my believe is, for the avrage person that does not need ultra lux stays some points can be good but 2% back will usually level it out. This is of your not an expert just an average person.
Chase 1.5x is available on consumer and business cards.
AMEX 1.5x consumer and 2x business.
Plus more for bonus categories.
Not hard to get a value of 2 cents per point. But even 1.5 is way ahead.
Because if every year hotels and airlines keep raising the points needed for redemption, points become less valuable. This has been the trend over the last few years, has it not?
That’s the value of Hybrid points, like CSR or AMEX BP.
Choose between redeeming at 1.5 cents or transferring into miles when they’re worth more.
Thanks Dan. It’s amazing how many times you mention hybrid points are the best and people still don’t get it.
To be honest I can’t keep up in both Chase & Amex … but at least I can focus on Amex and do amazing things with my points.
It’s feels like every day you post amazing deals with hybrids
Is the free night certificate from the Marriott credit card affected from peak and off peak prices?
Yes
Does that mean that any hotel priced at 35k points or less for that night will be able to be redeemed with your free night certificate, regardless of what category it is (even what’s normally a cat. 6)?
Never mind. It looks like the off-peak price for a cat. 6 will be 40,000 points, still too high for the free award redemption. And the peak price for a cat. 5 is 40,000, also too high to redeem a free night. So it looks like cardholders will get Bonvoyed in that regard!
Will I still be able to use a hotel package for that tier hotel even on the peak dates?
Yes
In the meantime, Marriott raised Redemption rates worldwide a year ago while promising to introduce off peak rates. I scheduled a few nights in Europe, with a promise from Marriott that they would rebook it at the off-peak rate once it’s announced. of course, my stay was in January and they only announced off peak rates and dates now and September 8th months later. And yes, the hotel I stayed in is much cheaper in January using the off peak rates that they just announced.
I tend to go with the flow but I deal with people and situations honestly and I really do not like when an organization or big Corporation do not treat people honestly.
The certs got screwed by this. They are now excluded from peak cat 5 days but didn’t gain off peak cat 6. Happy I booked a potential stay with 3 certs as the dates went up to peak.
Not sure it’s worth keeping 3 cards for certs next year as it’s getting even harder to use them.
Just saved 10k points cancelling previous booking and rebooking. Went down from 35,000 points a night to 30,000!
If I have 31K points earned from the Starwood program and converted to bonvoy, what’s my best option to use them for? The devaluation (I know I’m late here) is such a bummer.
“no base room awards available”
What’s that?? care to elaborate?
Do the 5-day and 7-day certs still work during peak days?
Answered above that they do.
I just got Bonvoyed!
Dan I had booked in last February for the Marriott Stellaris in Aruba for this coming Yeshiva week @ 50k points per night. On the 14th when dynamic pricing came into effect they changed my reservation to 60k per night claiming that since I do not have enough point accrued now they are able to change the reservation. I believe (although I’m probably wrong) that this runs contrary to what you said would happen. The customer service rep lodged a complaint on my behalf but said they had no idea what the outcome would be.
Any advice?
HUCA
Tried 2x already. One said I need the points accrued and then they’ll update the reservation the other said there is no recourse and the system can’t change it back. That person also said in the dynamic pricing email they sent out about a month ago they warned that you need the points accrued to keep the existing reservation as is. Is that a false statement? I already booked airfare. Is there any recourse?
2x? I’ve had to do 20x with Marriott!

Thanks Dan. I’m guessing this happened for anyone that had a reservation with not enough points to cover. I’m surprised I’m the only one that has noticed so far.
I HUCA’d. They said when I accrue enough I should call back and they’ll adjust down points
