For the first time ever, 2 banks will work together to limit the signup bonus offered on a co-brand card.
Below is a copy of the new restrictions on the Chase Marriott Premier Plus consumer card that will start on 8/26. Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other hotel cards!
In other words you can currently receive the signup bonus as long as you don’t have a Marriott consumer card and haven’t received a signup bonus on a Marriott consumer card in the past 24 months.
Starting on 8/26 though you also won’t get the bonus on the Marriott consumer card if:
- You have the SPG Consumer AMEX or had one within the last 30 days.
- You have or had the SPG Consumer Luxury AMEX or SPG Business AMEX and got the bonus on one of those cards within the past 24 months
- You were approved for any SPG AMEX product within the past 90 days.
Similar cross-bank terms will soon be added onto all Marriott and Starwood cards. Unfortunately AMEX isn’t currently awarding any signup bonus points on the Starwood cards.
It can definitely be worth holding onto Starwood AMEX and Chase Marriott cards as they each come with highly valuable annual anniversary nights.
If you don’t want to be subject to these new terms you’ll have to apply for the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card by 8/25. Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other hotel cards!
This is just another reason why I was rooting against the Marriott takeover of Starwood. They have murdered the value for spending on Starwood AMEX cards and are now starting cross-bank bonus crackdowns. Sad!

It’s not the banks teaming up together. It’s prob Marriott making the banks put that in as part of the agreement for the 2 banks to both have Marriott cards. It’s smart of Marriot because they know that otherwise the amount of people getting credit card sign up bonus would double if they let people get both bonuses.
That’s what I wrote at the end of the post.
But in the end of the day it’s these 2 banks.
Why would it be smart for Marriott? They sell points to the card issuers. The issuers are the ones who would lose by paying to acquire a customer yet not getting all their spending.
Is this subject to 5/24?
The consumer card is, the business isn’t.
Do you mean you can get the business card if you exceed 5/24 or do you mean if you get it, it won’t count towards 5/24?
Random but how do you think applying for both of these cards or more with 2bm after 8/26 would work? Do you think you would be eligible for the bonus on both in that case?
This is down right illegal weather it’s a third party or not. At the end of the day two banks price fixing and I stress third party or not. Is there nothing a lawyer can do about this?
Collusion!!!
umm what? price fixing a bonus?
you mean aside from telling you that you are wrong?
Makes sense to signup for the mariott business now?
The AMEX Luxury card is rumored to give a 125k bonus, so shouldn’t I rather wait for that as it will be either or?
Dan you say “they each come with highly valuable annual anniversary nights.” how so?? I still have 2 Marriott night awards I have not been able to find a decent hotel to use it on!!

100k
Bonus still available?
If I was an additional card holder on someone else’s amex spg account in the past 30 days would that disqualify me from a bonus?
What bonus
The 75k signup bonus on the chase spg card (that this deal post is about?)
I applied and got the Marriott Premier Plus for the 100k points welcome bonus limited time offer three weeks ago. I have another $3k to go to complete the $5k spend to get the bonus. After reading the new rules Marriott put on the Chase/Amex cards, I thought I have to change my strategy and complete the $5k spend before 8/26. Now, after reading this post, does that mean I’ll still get the welcome bonus since I got the card before 8/26 and complete the $5k spend after 8/26? I have the Chase Marriott Biz card and Amex SPG Consumer & Biz cards, which are in those new rules.
Hi Dan:
The AMEX Luxury card is rumored to give a 125k bonus or a high bonus in any case, so shouldn’t I rather wait for that as it will be either or?
I applied for the credit card on 8/25 and I was told that they need to review my application. I then received a letter dated 8/29 saying that they were not able to approve my application because “We didn’t receive your response to proceed without the new card member bonus”. Not sure why they don’t want to give me the bonus. I want to call reconsideration line. Do you think I have good chances of getting approved with the bonus? What should I say to the representative?
Anyone else had this scenario?
