Limited time welcome bonus and annual fee waiver:
For a limited time only, you will get $300 cash back for opening the Blue Cash Preferred AMEX and spending $3,000 in 6 months. Previous welcome bonus offers for this card has ranged from $0-$250 and had a 3 month spending threshold period.
The annual fee on this card is normally $95, but if you apply with this offer the annual fee will be waived for the first year!
If you buy $500 of groceries per month for 6 months you’ll earn the $300 welcome bonus and $180 cash back from the groceries, for a total of $480 cash back!
For rates and fees of the Blue Cash Preferred® Card, please visit here.
Welcome bonus terms:
You won’t get the welcome bonus on this card if you have or previously had this card. If you are not eligible for the bonus a pop-up will appear to let you know before you submit your application.
Card earnings:
This card won’t compete with the Citi Double Cash card, which earns 2% cash back everywhere for general purchases with a path to convert to miles or gift cards at 2.67% back.
However the Blue Cash Preferred has awesome cashback categories:
- This card earns a whopping 6% cash back at US supermarkets. That includes large chains and standalone grocery stores. There is a cap of $6,000 in annual spending for this bonus, so you can get up to $360 cash back annually on grocery shopping. After $6,000 spent at grocery stores you’ll earn 1% cash back.
- You’ll get 6% cash back on US streaming services with no cap, including Amazon Music Unlimited, Apple Music, Apple TV+, AT&T Now, Audible, CBS All Access, Disney+, ESPN+, Fubo TV, HBO, Hulu, iHeartRadio, Kindle Unlimited, Luminary, MLB.TV, NBA League Pass, Netflix, NHL.TV, Pandora, Peacock, Prime Video, Showtime, Sling TV, SiriusXM Streaming and Satellite, Spotify, Stitcher, TIDAL, YouTube Music Premium, YouTube Premium, YouTube TV
- You’ll get 3% cash back at US gas stations, with no cap.
- You’ll get 3% cash back with on transit with no cap, including taxis, rideshare, parking, tolls, trains, buses and more.
- You’ll get 1% cash back on everything else
AMEX Offers:
Earn statement credits at websites and stores that you register for in your AMEX account.
Return Protection And Other AMEX Protections:
My favorite AMEX benefit is return protection. If you need to return an item up to $300 and a store won’t take it back due to a time limited or final sale policy, AMEX will gladly refund you thanks to return protection. Nearly all of the time you’ll even be able to keep the item, but if you are asked to send it back, the return shipping will be free. This benefit is valid for $1,000 of returns per card per calendar year.
Additionally, if a store charges a restocking fee to return an item then AMEX will cover that cost, up to $300/item, as part of their return protection coverage.
Unfortunately as of 2020, most AMEX cards got rid of return protection. Cards that no longer have return protection include higher end cards like AMEX Business Gold ($295/year), AMEX Gold ($250/year), Delta Platinum and Delta Business Platinum ($250/year), AMEX Green ($150/year), Marriott Business ($125/year), Delta Gold and Delta Business Gold ($99/year), and most lower end cards as well.
The Blue Cash Preferred card escaped unscathed though and continues to offer return protection!
Other AMEX benefits include:
- An additional year of warranty coverage, double the original manufacturers warranty, and if you have any issue in the extended warranty year they’ll pay to have it fixed or refund your entire purchase price without a hassle. This benefit is far more valuable than warranty benefits offered by other banks.
- If you need to dispute a charge there’s nobody who makes it easier or as pain-free as American Express does. It’s the easiest dispute resolution process in the industry by leaps and bounds and you can do it all online.
- If your item is stolen or broken within 90 days you’ll be covered.
- Complimentary Shoprunner 2 day free shipping and return shipping on hundreds of websites.
- Secondary car rental CDW protection worldwide and primary available for $19.95/rental.
- See this post to see just how amazing AMEX benefits can be.
Card convertibility:
You can convert this card to the Blue Cash Everyday Card with no annual fee. That card earns 3% cash back at US supermarkets up to $6K, 2% cash back at US gas stations and select d4epartment stores, and 1% cash back elsewhere.
Intro APR:
This card offers 0% intro APR on purchases for 12 months.

too bad not a business card. looking for ones that offer 0% APR along with a decent SUB.
pop up window 🙁
Is it possible to upgrade from an Amex everyday card?
no signup bonus for that…
how does this compare to the amex gold? trying to decide which one to get and give up my chase reserve card. dont travel much.
This offers cash back, the gold card offer MR points.
If you don’t travel then the gold card likely isn’t the best option other than the limited time bonus.
is it smarter to use cards merely to get bonus before moving on to the next new card for its bonus, rather then using just 1-2 cards for entire year? the former has been my strategy via opening 6+ cards for the year.
Is this part of Amex membership rewards?
No.
Keep on getting an error message won’t take me to the link.
Try another browser/device?
try incognito
same! I am getting this error message:
Error: Server Error
The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request.
Please try again in 30 seconds.
Try another browser/device?
Try incognito?
If I’m assuming correctly, AMEX cash back can’t be converted to MR points. Correct?
Correct, I’d have mentioned it otherwise 🙂
I got it to work incognito. I haven’t had many amex cards in my life and for some reason I’m getting the popup that I won’t be eligible for the sign up bonus I would still like this card due to to its return protection benefit. What are my odds of being approved without the sign up bonus?
Should be good
Regarding return protection, is the benefit removed from existing cards that were opened while that benefit still applied or is it only missing from new cards?
Thanks once again Dan, for all the super helpful information you share!
Removed from new and existing.
If I get a notification that says I’m not eligible for the sign up offer is there anything I can do about that to still receive the sign up offer? Apply through mail?
Did you have this card before?
I didn’t have this card before, but I did have amex blue cash (not preferred) and I got the same message. Going to call customer service by phone and see if they offer me anything.
did calling work?
Might depend who you talk to but mine said tough noogies 🙁
Had the same issue, trying to call now, but long wait time.
why would that matter anyway can you bypass the pop-up through calling or regular snail mail?
I did not. This happened to me with the Amex Platinum as well and I never had that either.
Dan, Would using the card to buy gift cards at grocery stores trigger anything at AMEX?
Is it possible to get this or something close for an upgrade from the Amex Blue Cash ?
does the blue cash every day card have return protection, if I were to convert?
No
Are Restaurants included in the 6% cash back?
Return protection is $1000 per year per account, additional users do NOT get their own $1000.
Just confirmed this with Amex rep.
Does the 3% cash back with on transit include EZ-Pass?
yes
My 2017 iPad dropped and its screen broke. It was after my AppleCare+ 2 year warranty expired, but within the AMEX 1 year extended warranty. AMEX would not cover the repair because it won’t cover accidental damage, even though AppleCare+ would cover it. Disappointing, but otherwise AMEX service is MUCH better than any other credit card I have had.
does this card have foreign transaction fee?
also whats the difference between primary and secondary car rental CDW protection worldwide?
Foreign transaction fee is 2.7%.
I was thinking about applying Schwab card (current bonus $200.00) but this is definitely better. Thank you.
How does this compare to the Amex EveryDay®
Preferred Credit Card?
This is a cash back card.
I received this offer in September, and between the $300 back, and 6% on groceries, decided to try it. The streaming 6% also applies to my t-mobile plan, so with several family members on the plan, that alone would pay for next year’s annual fee. So far, so good.
Apparently the 6% T-Mobile,, and the 3% at CVS and some other drugstores, do not apply to this card. Too bad. I’ll definitely use the card enough to get the $300 bonus, but it may not be worth continuing next year with the annual fee.
@dan,
If I get this card then each additional user gets up to 1000 in return protection? Also does each card member get an additional 6x points in groceries up to 6000? And does each additional member get to use the same offers? Also how do I file a claim for an additional card member? Thank you
-I’ve seen conflicting reports about AUs getting their own $1,000.
-No, the $6,000 cap is across all cards.
-Which offers?
-AUs can make their own login.
if I am additional card holder on someone els account, can I apply for this card in my own??
Yes.
LOL, when I opened the application it says “you’re pre-approved!” …then I got the dreaded pop-up. I’ve got a few Amex cards and have opened and closed a few over the past few years.
I already have a blue cash card. Will I be able to get the annual fee waived with an upgrade? (Because it’s not showing that)
No, this is for a new application only.
does anyone know if this works at costco?
Costco doesn’t accept AMEX.
I recently got this card with a $250 welcome offer and $95 annual fee, will they match the current offer if I contact them?
Unlikely.
does it have foreign transaction fee?
I got a pop up window saying im not eligible for the welcome bonus. i have 7 cards total including the amex gold. i dont open and close cards and ive only opened 1 card in past 2 years. Guess Amex just doesnt want me as a customer.
Hey Dan, recently been seeing the 0% apr cards advertised and wanted to confirm for everyone that carrying the balance will still negatively affect you credit report. Just because there is no interest doesn’t mean “nothing to lose”.
Thank you very much!
What’s a good downgrade option?
Blue Cash Everyday
Rav Dan
Is There A CC with 0% or Low APR on Balance transfers ???
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/citi-rewards-card-15k-points-no-annual-fee-0-apr-incredible-small-purchasesthankyou-redemption-rebates/
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/citi-double-cash-card-earn-2-cashback-everywhere-option-transfer-miles-via-citi-trifecta-united-business-class-israel-42k-points/
Hi dan thanks for your time and help sorry going off topic I currently have a sapphire with a lot of points should I transfer to my wife cardbefore I downgrade or downgrade to a freedom with the points and then transfer back to the new card if I transfer to my wife can I transfer back to myself
No difference.
You can upgrade and still get $150 in spending bonus
If I’m currently an AU on someone else’s card, am I eligible for the Bonus? even without them dropping me from AU status.
You are eligible.
I received the pop up as said in the article before submitting the application (which I consequently did not submit ).
“C******, based on your history with credit card balance transfers, American Express welcome offers, introductory APR offers, or the number of Cards you have opened and closed, you are not eligible to receive the welcome offer, intro APRs, and intro plan fees.”
I never did any: credit card balance transfer, intro APR offer, closed any cards, and only have 2 other cards open with them.
So I’m guessing maybe I do need to take my AU card off….?
any data points if this worked?
Was considering the Discover card which would you say is better assuming I maximize groceries on this or 5% categories (with doubling)on that?
I don’t need streaming or gas benefits. I see the both as effective maximum 650/660 just this is 300 “upfront”
Discover is way better because it will be 2% for everything else and 14 mo.s 0% apr if you care about that
Does the Blue Cash Everyday have return protection and warranty extension?
I use this card for groceries, but after 6k/year the value is gone and it costs $100/year (making the benefit really $260/year). I can get the same $260 by spending $8,666 on the blue cash everyday. But I do not want to downgrade if it will cost me the return protection and warranty extension.
Thanks.

Thanks. For those interested, the answer is that as of 1/1/20, the Blue Cash Everyday does NOT have return protection or warranty extension.
This vs. Citi Double Cash vs. Freedom Unlimited if I value the return protection? (And the 0% intro APR of course)
Only this has return protection.
I didn’t get any pop up while applying but they immediately denied me. Called up to reconsider, and even though I have a good score and pay on time she didn’t even agree to reconsider. I heard that if your address is in Brooklyn or Lakewood they automatically deny… disgusting
Doesthis card offer plan it like other amex cards? And if so will it still be interest free after the end of 12months?
Is this actually cash back like to have credit for your statement?
Yes
thanks. Also just wondering what makes this better than the blue cash every day which has promotional $200 for only $1000 spending and no annual fee. Seems like a better deal, no?
Because this is a much better card.
6% back, return protection, extended warranty protection, etc.
oh right that makes sense. Thank you for your quick responses. my friend recently told me about your website and your deals are awesome! Im now a daily DD follower.
My pleasure and thanks!
Can I sign up for this card and the blue everyday together?
@Dan?
does it have free foreign transactions
If I have the freedom unlimited what is a better card to get, this or the freedom flex?
Just tried applying online, but was denied the Signup Offer due to having received an AMEX offer in the past. The only one I’ve gotten gotten so far was the Delta Gold Signup bonus in January 2020. Is that a normal block? or better to try calling?
I currently have a standard blue cash card. Is there anything I can do to apply for the blue cash preferred card and get these signed up bonuses. It appears to me that because I have the standard blue cash card I would not get the $300 or the 6% on groceries. Am I correct?
Hello Dan how can I file a report against amex for promising me a welcome bonus and then backing out
In addition to return protections, does this have car rental insurance?

Hi Dan,
I have 319K miles from the capital One card I got last year and just got charged $95 annual fee.
A) can I switch out the miles and how? To what?
B) Can I still cancel the card and get the $95 charge refunded?
C) Which new card/offer would be my best bet for miles? I do around $100k a year on cards.
Thanks,
Leibel
@dan A little off topic, but wondering what CC you’d advise in my situation. I’m qualified for the Amex Plat special offer of 125K points after $5K spend. I can also get Chase Ink Pref @ 100K points. I’m a little hesitant to do the Amex Plat now b/c of annual fee and i won’t use any of the travel perks during COVID. I don’t like to apply for more than 1 card every 6 months or so.
Where can I find a list of other cards offering return protection?
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/major-changes-coming-american-express-benefits-master-chart-whats-added-removed/
Can the cash back be linked to Amazon to take advantage of the occasional Amex discounts for paying with points? Or is that only with Membership Rewards?
Only with Membership Rewards.
just got denied , do not have any amex card and have a great score -:(
Do you know if the 6% grocery benefit is for supermarkets all over the world (Israel) or is specific to the U.S.
“6% cash back at US supermarkets”
Is Amex approving these days Gold or Platinum business cards?
Yes.
this is in the “Terms and Conditions”:
If we in our sole discretion determine that you have engaged in abuse, … in connection with the welcome offer in any way or that you intend to do so (for example, …. if you cancel or downgrade your account within 12 months after acquiring it; …), we may not credit the Statement Credit … We may also cancel this Card account and other Card accounts you may have with us.
Well, of course i’m cancelling the card after 12 months. I don’t pay for credit cards. i have a lot of credit available without having to pay.
How serious are they? i have 2 other amexes; i have my longest credit history with them, and truthfully they’re probably the biggest impact on my very good credit score. Would they really cancel my other card?? Has that ever happened to anybody after they cancelled?
If you aren’t cancelling within 12 months, then what are you worried about?
bit the bullet, applied, got approved even though i have two other amexes – blue cash and an everyday..
Congrats!
Do I have a chance of getting this card and the Platinum one after the other? If not, should I rather apply for this as it is about to expire or the platinum is still a better offer?
Yes, you can get both with 1 pull on the same day.
What is the likelihood of approval for both? I currently have the everyday $7,500 CL.
Impossible to say, but no reason not to try. Certainly doable.
Do you think it works on Instacart? That’s all I used nowadays
Sure!
I don’t jump at every offer but rather wait for “special” ones. I’ve already done Amex delta and a few gold in the past so don’t expect those again soon. Is this a “great” offer, one that I should jump in for?
This is a great deal if you want this card (6% groceries, return protection, etc).
i applied for this card but it doesn’t say anywhere that the first year the annual fee is waived
Got it at 11:56. .. I hope their clock works. Thank
