Chase has launched the Marriott Bonvoy Bold Card. The card has no annual fee and offers 30K points for spending $2,000 in 3 months.

The benefits on the card are pretty weak as you can see in the chart below, but it has a decent signup bonus for a no annual fee card. It could also be a decent downgrade option from the $95/year Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Consumer Card, though that would lose your valuable anniversary night if you do that.

You won’t get approved for the card if:

  1. You have a Chase consumer Marriott Bonvoy card.
  2. You got a signup bonus on a Chase consumer Marriott Bonvoy card in the past 24 months.

You won’t get the welcome bonus on this card if:

  1. You have or had an active Starwood AMEX/Marriott Bonvoy AMEX Consumer card in the past 30 days.
  2. You received a signup bonus for a Starwood Luxury/Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant AMEX or the Starwood Business/Marriott Bonvoy Business AMEX card in the past 24 months.
  3. You were approved for any Starwood AMEX/Marriott Bonvoy AMEX card in the past 90 days.

All Chase cards are subject to 5/24 restrictions, meaning that you are not likely to be approved if you have been approved for 5 or more consumer credit cards in the past 24 months. Note that the Chase system automatically counts cards like authorized user cards and store cards as cards that count towards 5/24, but if you explain to Chase that those cards are merely authorized user cards or store cards they can manually approve you for a new card.

You can check your credit report for free at the federally authorized annualcreditreport.com to check how many accounts are shows as being open in the past 24 months.

does pulling reports from annualcreditreport.com hurt my score and count as a hard pull

  2. Lovehacks

Can I downgrade to this from the original SPG card (the purple one)?

  3. RW

I had the AMEX SPG card (with a $95 annual fee) which now became the Marriot Bonvoy AMEX consumer card. That has been my primary card for 15 years. What are the benefits for that card now? Don’t want to cancel bc had the card for so long, can I downgrade it to a no annual fee card?

    • Dan

Main benefit is the 35K anniversary night. The value of the night should easily exceed the $95 annual fee.

      • RW

Thanks. anything to downgrade it to with a no annual fee? and is it the same point benefits as the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Consumer Card?

      • RW

sorry, just saw your answer to the second question in another post. But any downgrade option? Thanks again.

          • JS

You can downgrade to another Amex card like the Amex everyday.

          • Dan

            That’s a big YMMV.
But if you have recent data points let us know!

          • JS

I have not done it in a long time (over 5 years ago) but I did downgrade a consumer SPG to the everyday (I actually think it was called blue at time of downgrade). Have not tried such a PC since.

          • RW

I Will call and see if its an option and let you know. Thanks!

          • Dan

It was easy 5 years ago. Very difficult if not impossible now

          • Achshell

            I was told absolutely no.

Dan, while you state this, I feel like keeping a card for a free night is only worth it if you get the Ritz or JW Marriot 35k nights in Westchester, Tysons Corner, Miami…, for all the other 35k hotels, it mostly offers Residence Inn’s or other hotels I can book at $120… That being said, I’d rather close my card…

Is it worth to keep it open with the Ritz, JW, and the few other luxury options for future years, or do you see those as getting a level increase, thereby disabling the 35k option on those?

        • jason

Last time I checked, $95 is less than $120…

          • Zal

Correct, but not everyone needs these hotel stays anyway.
So getting a hotel that costs $200-250 for 95 makes one want to keep the card.
But a $120 hotel for $95, when you’re not sure you even need the hotel stay, makes you think twice.

  4. Yakov

What is the use of these points? Only hotels? How many nights can u get for 50,000 points?

    • Dan

Similar benefits as the Chase Boundless consumer card, plus Boingo WiFi.

  5. rebyid

Thank you for the chart. Very helpful in reminding me to constantly re-evaluate what cards I’m holding.

  6. Dav

Dan is there a thread on DDF where I can sell my annual 35k certificate?

  7. LM

What does Elite night credits of 15 mean?

  8. Java

So if I have the Biz SPG Amex could I still get this card?
