The CDC has put out an alert to throw away all romaine lettuce across the country. This is in response to a severe E-Coli outbreak that has infected 32 people across 11 states.

More info here from the Washington Post.

CDC advice:

  • Consumers who have any type of romaine lettuce in their home should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick.
    • This advice includes all types or uses of romaine lettuce, such as whole heads of romaine, hearts of romaine, and bags and boxes of precut lettuce and salad mixes that contain romaine, including baby romaine, spring mix, and Caesar salad.
    • If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine or whether a salad mix contains romaine, do not eat it and throw it away.
    • Wash and sanitize drawers or shelves in refrigerators where romaine was stored. Follow these five steps to clean your refrigerator.
    • CDC is advising that consumers do not eat any romaine lettuce because no common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand of romaine lettuce has been identified.
  • Restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell any romaine lettuce, including salads and salad mixes containing romaine.

  10. Nancy

Does anyone know if this applies brands that are grown in greenhouses?

    • BC

Does anyone know whether what is labeled as hothouse really is?
      AND
Does anyone know whether it is all processed and packed in the same facility with a high risk of contamination?

  11. Just saying.

Hippie Jenny McCarthy farms refuse to vaccinate their lettuce and now there’s an outbreak.

    • Barry

Right lots of the “kosher” lettuce is from Canada. There has never been an issue with it as of yet

    • as2

This seems to include Canada as well

    • username

      From the WaPo article
The Public Health Agency of Canada has reported 18 people infected with the same strain of E. coli.

  12. hh

Positiv is greenhouse grown does it include that?

  13. Clutch

See eat more donuts no outbreaks there

    • Mark E.

Doing that now. Thanks for the suggestion.

  14. Eli Willner

You can eat coli flower instead. Hmm, maybe not.

    • Moish

      Are you already in Antarctica?

  15. YAAKOV

Im not sure your right. i believe the bodek stuff is different

  16. Jack

I should throw out all my weed ?

  17. Important

Dan, what does all mean ?

  18. Anonymous

Or just wash all your lettuce in bleach

  19. pop quiz

I’d love to see ppl get all serious about throwing out their lettuce or other greens when a hashgacha says its infested

  20. AAP

Does anyone know what “ALL” means? Of someone can please clarify… Dan keeps posting that all means all, but if if all=all and I don’t know what all is then I won’t know what all is. Thank you in advance for the clarification.

    • Nick

All means all and means means means

      • Reggie

And and and all means more than all

    • Totty

and the definition of is is is
      -Bill Clinton

  21. Michele

Crap. Has some for lunch yesterday and today.

    • Work-for-ur-muny

Did you just write what you eat for lunch there? It might even be worse than E Coli…

  22. Vaccinated

Lettuce is only danergous if you vaccinate. Otherwise your body can fight e-coli naturally.

  23. HK

Kosher has nothing to do with something having bacteria. I don’t get why “All means all” is so hard to comprehend for some.

    • Pop quiz

Because purchasing lettuce from positive/ kosher gardens which don’t sell nationwide are more controlled and clean. Hence the no bugs for example

    • abe

Dus is nisht lettuce, dus is kosher lettuce !!

    • li

nope, in this case, kosher does have to do with bacteria, since positive grows their own lettuce.
so, all does not mean all after all @dan

  24. Aryeh

As the father of a child who got this strain of ecoli and went through years of hardship, heed the CDC advice.

    • ckmk47

My/our sympathy and best wishes to you and your family.

      • Aryeh

        Thanks so much! Appreciate it

  25. Rita Landa

Guess we all gonna gain weight now and eat sandwiches instead of salad

    • Aaron

Try baby spinach or arugula, both healthier then romaine.

  26. abe

Romaine is bitter and nobody should eat it ever! who ever eats it just likes fating salad dressing that they drown on.

    • Moish

Especially since it was invented by the Romanians.

  27. Jim

Just returb your lettuce for refund and you can also ask for $50 store credit for your inconvenience

  28. Nechama

All doesn’t mean all. Greenhouse grown should be fine . E. coli comes from human excrement in the fields

    • Alissa

What kosher brand do you know that’s green house grown. Only one I know of is fresh box farms from Massachusetts that has a kvh heksher

  29. Happy

Hi. What about romaine lettuce that I bought before this notice came out? That should be ok, right Dan?

    • BC

Hope the hothouse is not packed in the same facility as the infested produce.

  30. Nick

for those asking about “Bodek”, “Kosher” or “Green House”. Although they are probably included in CDC, know that the “one” you bought doesn’t have it….#all-means-all

  31. Jack6941

    FYI, for what it’s worth.
Bodek, pos’tiv, and kosher gardens put out official letters saying it doesn’t apply to them
Take it or leave it ( I would leave it ) for what it’s worth.

    • HK

What an irresponsible letter. Opening up themselves for a lawsuit if G-D forbid someone gets sick on their lettuce.

    • Chuchem

Postiv is from Mexico- grown is a green house. E. Coli usually comes from bacteria in animal feces that run into irrigation ditches.

  32. YMW

Imagine this coming around erev pesach…..

    • Daniel Baum

      Finally, a decent comment 🙂

  33. Fayge

I saw letters from both Bodek and pos’tiv stating that their lettuce is safe to eat and the ban does not apply to them.

    • Dan

Until that comes from the CDC, I’ll avoid Romaine.

      • Pop quiz

Can I suggest you do some research as to who and what positive/ kosher gardens is all about?

Maybe you don’t get those brands in Ohio

  34. Laya

Positive is not included in the outbreak. As per letter from positive.

    • Dan

      Aren’t they nogaiya b’davar?
I don’t see any exceptions listed on the CDC site…

      • Use your head.

They are not going to lie if it will kill people.

  35. Shmu

I just bought romaine that is made in Mexico is it ok?

  36. Yis

I just checked with Bill and Shrillary Clinton about what ” all” means.
Bill says ” It depends what ‘is’ is”.

  37. chaya

    @dan
    all does not mean all.
it says lettuce from us and canada. It says nothing about greenhouse grown in mexico

  38. Eli

    Statement from Kosher Gardens:

    November 20, 2018

    Dear Customer,

We are aware of the CDC alert on romaine lettuce. Pos’Tiv and Kosher Gardens do not get romaine from the market, as we only grow in our own fields under controlled environments. As such, any national outbreak of E Coli is not associated with our lettuce.

Wishing all our customers a Happy and Healthy Chanuka,

    Chesky Seitler
    COO
    Kosher Gardens

    • Duvi

The CDC does NOT yet know where this E-coli is stemming from for the latest outbreak, so for these frum companies to boldly state that their lettuce is exempt is quite frankly, disgusting.

      • Alissa

Agree. Is irresponsible for kosher brands to make that statement. Maybe a kosher hydroponically grown Romaine could have a leg to stand on but anything grown in soil has risk – no matter who certifies the kashrut

    • BC

The industry is very big. Until I hear that there is no possible connection, such as packing plant I am not eating lettuce.

  39. Jeff Bezos

Bodek also Released statement saying their romaine lettuce are safe to eat and are not affected by CDC alert

    • Duvi

DO NOT BUY ROMAINE LETTUCE- the outbreak has affected someone’s kidney, which has now been removed- do YOU want to take that risk??? Jewish companies can’t claim that one “laboratory test”, coincidentally done on the same day as the CDC recall, means their product is safe. The CDC can’t yet pinpoint the source of the E. Coli outbreak- what makes you think that the CEO of Bodek, Yitzchock Rosenbluth, seen stuffing his face on theyeshivaworld with a bag of romaine (gross pic, sorry), has no vested interest in telling you to risk your life by buying his product?

  40. Joel

Finally we have scientific proof that cookies and cake are the safest food…..

  41. L.S.

E.coli is a bacteria from human FECES. Usually this happens because migrant workers in the field defecate there and it contaminates the vegetables. For people complaining this happens too much, complain to your Congress representative to make striciter oversight if how your vegetables are picked. (Or just give the workers a dang port a potty and some bath room breaks!)

  42. Robert

I have been and continue to eat it. What’s the problem? Just wash your lettuce first.

    • Jake

The e-Coli doesn’t wash away, Robert!!!!

  43. Yankel

I thought Jews were supposed to be smart

  44. Fredia nelsen

Can I eat Romaine lettus that I am growing in my backyard garden?
