Winter Storm Kenan is predicted to dump heavy snow across the East coast this weekend. Depending on their storm’s severity, flight operations may be a mess for long after the storm.
Airlines are allowing for free changes with no difference in fare, though policies vary by airline. If you don’t want to fly, you should wait and see if your flight gets cancelled as that would enable a full refund.
- Alaska has a generous policy, with waivers for flights booked by 1/27 for travel through 1/30. Included airports include Baltimore, Boston, JFK, Newark, Philadelphia, and Washington DC, and. Travel can be rebooked through 2/6.
- Frontier has a generous policy, with waivers for flights booked by 1/26 for travel through 1/30. Included airports include Baltimore, Boston, LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia, Trenton, Washington DC, and more. Travel can be rebooked through 2/16.
- United has a decent policy, with waivers for flights booked by 1/25 for travel through 1/30. Included airports include Baltimore, Boston, Buffalo, Cleveland, JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington DC, and more. Travel can be rebooked through 2/2.
- Southwest has waivers for travel through 1/30 from limited airports only, including Hartford and Boston. Southwest allows free rebooking within 14 days of travel.
- American is only offering waivers for flights booked by 1/26 for travel through 1/29. Included airports include Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and more. Travel can be rebooked through 2/5.
- Delta’s policy is stingy and is only offering waivers for flights booked by 1/26 for travel through 1/29. Included airports include Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and more. Travel can be rebooked through 2/1.
- JetBlue’s policy is stingy and is only offering waivers for flights booked by 1/26 for travel through 1/29. Included airports include Boston, Charlotte, JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and more. Travel can be rebooked through 2/1.
- Spirit is offering waivers for travel through 1/29. Included airports include Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia, and more. Travel can be rebooked through 2/5.

Many of these travel waivers came out on Wednesday. I was able to take advantage of Delta’s by booking a cheap Shabbat (Saturday) flight out Miami and immediately was able to change it for free to an expensive Sunday flight.

It’s a gamble.
Saturday flights may very well all get cancelled and people that are able to rebook on Saturday are likely to gobble up all of the available seats for travel on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.
Trading for Sunday now may be a wise bet and one that I would take, unless you don’t think the storm will materialize.

Unless I can hold a spot in both places. I remember doing that with a flight to YYZ out of jfk or lga, I had them put me on 2 different flights departing from NYC to yyz.
What’s the chance they’ll let me rebook from MIA to FLL , happens go work out better for me.
So if avlb I would change to Sunday and swap airports. That would be very clutch and don’t have to run away from shabbos to catch a 7:50pm flight, which will probably be delayed or canceled.
I think they would allow this, but call and find out.
Delta went ahead and canceled all flights leaving JFK and or LGA to FLL/MIA 1/29 Mt shabbos and all morning flights 1/30 as well.
I would assume they did that for all travel on those dates.
Now the fun starts.

Humbly, I’d say very likely they’d allow changes MIA, FLL, PBI. A few years ago I had a flight from FLL-EWR. A blizzard had other plans. I scrambled around trying to find flights, eventually United booking me from PBI. Although less than ideal (as my parents live 5 minutes from FLL), you take what you can get. If I were you, I’d change the flights to Sunday, and I highly doubt that you’d face problems changing from MIA to FLL (or even PBI if that helps you).

No plans for me but this would be quite handy if I did.
My son has a return flight to Israel on United this Sunday (Jan. 30). His plans have changed and doesn’t know when he’ll go back, possibly after Pesach. I checked a few days ago to check on switching the flight to May and it costs about the same as new round trip ticket (and he already has a TLV-NYC return ticket for end of June).
If the flight on Sunday is canceled, do I get a refund for half the ticket? What is the best course of action?
To those that decided to spend yeshiva week in South Florida. From a weather perspective, this past week in FL has been a disappointment for those folks. Shabbos morning in FL expected to be in the 30’s, skipping out on the blizzard up north, but coming back just in time to clean it all up. What a vacation! Maybe next year in Jerusalem (….or Cancun) for warm weather
