You can now use Hyatt points for MGM hotels in Las Vegas.
You can earn Hyatt points via the Hyatt Visa though you will earn more points per dollar by putting your spend on Chase Ultimate Rewards cards like Freedom, Sapphire Preferred, Ink Cash, Ink Bold, and Ink Plus. You or your spouse will need the Sapphire Preferred, Ink Bold, or Ink Plus to actually convert the Chase points to Hyatt (or any other airline or hotel).
When I redeem Hyatt points I aim to get a value of at least 1.6 cents per point. In high-end Hyatt hotels you can even get a value of 5 cents per point. The value received for redeeming points for these MGM hotels are generally pretty poor.
A nice benefit of redeeming Hyatt points is that you are not subject to resort fees at resort hotels. However when redeeming for MGM hotels you will be subject to resort fees even though Vegas hotels are hardly resorts in the first place.
The main benefit of the relationship is probably the ability to book MGM hotels on Hyatt.com on paid rates while earning Hyatt points and Hyatt stay credits. Non-elites earn 5 points per dollar, Hyatt Platinum elites earn 5.75 points per dollar and Diamond elites earn 6.5 points per dollar. Plus starting in August Hyatt elites can get MGM M Life elite status as well.
The rates below are for lowest refundable room type with tax. The value per point ignores the resort fee which is due at MGM hotels whether you use points or pay cash. It also ignores the points you would earn if you book a paid stay though if included would lower the true value per point. 1.17cpp (cents per point) means you are getting a value of 1.17 cents for each point used at that hotel.

Of course for every rule there’s an exception. Just look at the rate in Las Vegas for The Mirage on New Year’s Eve. Every other MGM hotel is showing sold out but the Mirage is $546.56 plus the $25 resort fee. Or burn 18,000 points for the same room at a value of 3.04 cents per point.
Of course traditionally you will always get the best bang for your buck by using your points at peak times as the point rate remains the same even when the cash rate climbs. The same will hold true in Vegas, when paid rates skyrocket it can be a good value to use your points. Just be sure to lock it in before the hotels sell out as you can always cancel point bookings until the stated cancellation deadline with no penalty.
Does the partnership between M Life and Hyatt go the other way? IE Can you use M Life points for anything Hyatt related?
Just stayed at NYNY (on a paid stay), and the resort fee is $22.40 (tax included)
I thought I read something about blackout dates for the MGM properties. I’m sure NYE would be one of the blackout dates if that is correct.
@LA2NYC:
You can earn M Life credits for staying in Hyatt hotels and match M Life status to Hyatt Platinum but you can’t stay in Hyatt hotels with M Life credits.
@Nick O:
Hyatt.com pegs it at $18 when booked there.
@Azhoopsfan:
It’s bookable for 18K on Hyatt.com as of now.
I need to be at the Aria on specific dates, rates are showing $199, $269 & $234… so up to 1.2 CPP, which may be enough for me to spring for 1 night & throw my 2 free nights (Hyatt card) at the others.
Do you know anything about their BRG? says they’ll meet another site’s offer & beat by 10%. I found 10/23 for $234 on Aria’s site and $199 on a ton of others…
Do you know when the Park Hyatt NYC @157 is going to open?
Thanks for a great post.
I like it when you give your readers a handle on the dollar value of points.
Is there a page on the main site or forums where you go through your personal benchmark valuations for the various reward currencies? I have USair miles, United miles, AA miles, Chase UR points, Amex MR points, Starpoints, and Hertz points. Because I don’t do much first class or international travel, I’m never sure what to consider a good deal.
How does one get elite status if not using the Hyatt card?
any good CC points now?
Emiled Hyatt – it is opening per their response May 2014.
Want to get the CC with the free 2 nights bUt I want to make sure I can use them there since the offer expires after a year.
According to the faqs, you can use your two free bonus nights at mgm, but you can’t book suites, if you received two bonus suite nights for getting the Hyatt card as a platinum member. Dan, any idea if anybody has had luck redeeming their bonus suite nights at these hotels? heading to bellagio on a week…..
