Marriott Extends Expiration Of Free Nights, Travel Packages, And Points Again

Marriott previously announced that they would extend free night awards from credit cards, travel packages, choice benefits, or promotions that expire in 2020 until 1/31/21, and then until 8/1/21.

They have now announced that any of those awards that were originally set to expire between 1/1/20-1/2/22 will now expire on 1/3/22.

This extension should reflect online automatically by 5/6.

Marriott previously announced that points won’t expire until 2/28/21 and then 7/31/21. That has been extended through 3/31/22. Points will begin expiring again on 4/1/22. Marriott points normally expire after 24 months of inactivity.

Hyatt and Hilton previously extended free nights through 12/31/21 last October, so this basically matches those extensions, though Marriott needed an extra half year to do that. Hopefully we’ll see chains extend free nights through next summer, when more travel around the globe should open up.

Amazing – such great news! Thanks!

When you use a certificate do they automatically apply the one with earliest days expiration?

How do I know when my package was supposed to expire? I got it just before they devalued the packages? I have a feeling that they are trying again to exclude these.

Waiting for IHG to make a move as well!

You think Hilton will match this?

I still got a bunch of nights expiring on 8/31

    • Dan

I think we’ll see further extensions.

It isn’t completely clear to me whether the travel packages issued just prior to the Starwood merger will be included in the extension. Any guess?

How do I find my free nights?
I have a Amex Starwood business card and never used a free night

Just logged into my Marriott account and all my certificates still show an expiration on 8/1/21. Do you think they are just slow with updating peoples’ accounts?

Read the post “This extension should reflect online automatically by 5/6.”

My expiriance with the Ritz night certificate was that they do not extend it if it was extended in the past. I actually found out too late and lost my free night.

Will we get the usual annual free night award that we get at the beginning of the card member year? Or will they count the extension as the annual free night?

    • Dan

Of course you’ll get that as well.

      Hyatt already extended to 12/31/21.
But yes, I hope they’ll go farther.

is there a link to check your free nights with Marriott? Thank you.

I don’t see how the anniversary nights are anywhere close to being worth more than the $95 AF or 125 for Amex business. I’ve got 5 35,000 certificates through Marriott and Amex that are basically worthless because at peak awards season, category 5 hotels require 40,000 or more. 2 certificates expire 8/1 (3 in September and November) so with summer the peak travel season I can’t find anywhere nice that will accept them. What a waste! Very frustrating. I think I’m gonna ditch most of my cards.

Would love to use a free night this week. Is there a list of recommended locations that I should look at?

Still not seeing the extended Expiration date

    • Dan

It’s Marriott, what do you expect?

Same thing here, free nights have not been adjusted.
