It’s worth noting that if you fly on Singapore and a partner airline that you’ll use the Star Alliance award chart.
In the past that meant paying more miles and losing out on the 15% online discount as you need to call Singapore to book partner award travel.
When I booked travel to Paris via Frankfurt on Singapore Airlines in the past I booked an award ticket with Singapore and made a separate award on United for the intra-Europe flights.
Now it will often be the same or nearly the same price to add partner award flights on the same award as the Singapore flights by calling up Singapore and using their Star Alliance award chart.
In fact with the new pricier Singapore award chart you can even save miles on some routes by adding on additional partner award flights and using the Star Alliance chart!
Best of all if you wait to book until 3/23 you won’t pay a fuel surcharge for the Singapore Airlines flights! This is actually the opposite of a devaluation for the Star Alliance award chart!
And of course you can get a free stopover as well if you want to take one along the way. Singapore Airlines allows mileage transfers from AMEX, Chase, Citi, and Starwood, making them a great option for awards.
For example:
-A Singapore suites flight from JFK to Frankfurt is currently 57,375 miles but is going up to 76K miles.
-A Singapore suites flight from JFK to Frankfurt connecting to a Lufthansa European style business class flight to Tel Aviv will remain 75K miles.
-A Singapore business class flight from JFK to Frankfurt is currently 48,875 miles but is going up to 65K miles.
-A Singapore business class flight from JFK to Frankfurt connecting to a Lufthansa European style business class flight to Tel Aviv will remain 57,500 miles.
-A Singapore first class flight from San Francisco to Singapore is currently 91,375 miles but is going up to 118K miles.
-A Singapore first class flight from San Francisco to Singapore connecting to an EVA business class flight to Taipei will remain 100K miles.
-A Singapore business class flight from San Francisco to Singapore is currently 68K miles but is going up to 88K miles.
-A Singapore business class flight from San Francisco to Singapore connecting to an EVA business class flight to Taipei will remain 87.5K miles.
-A Singapore suites flight from JFK to Singapore is currently 95,625 miles but is going up to 120K miles.
-A Singapore first class flight from Chicago to NYC on United and connecting to a Singapore suites flight to Singapore will remain 112.5K miles.
Post what other Star Alliance routes you find where you can save miles by adding a partner flight!
Dan,
Aren’t u gonna get hit with massive fuel surcharges on Lufthansa though?
@Dino:
The massive fuel surcharges are for crossing the Atlantic.
Why is North America to Europe, more expensive than NA to the Middle East using the *A award chart?
How much would the YQ be for the partner leg on the JFK-TLV route in R/J?
@MeirS:
Beats me 🙂
@Me:
Looks like it might add about $75.
Not seeing TLV come up in search options. Can you explain how that would come up?
@MB:
Read the post please.
“as you need to call Singapore to book partner award travel.”
So basically another example of hidden city ticketing. You can also pay $100 for a longer stopover and be sure to get your bags.
One question is can you wait list a SQ flight when the reservation includes a partner?
Thanks
@Dan:
Is there any way to do hidden city if I’m looking to fly to LON?
JFK-FRA in SQ Suites
FRA-LHR in LH Business
LHR-IST in TK Business ?
Would that work for NYC-TLV for Succos, looking to travel with a family of 8, I have about 750K Chase points and 150K Amex
Can you share a link to a post of how to search SA awards?
How do you book these tickets through which award partner?
i checked with united and i couldnt find anything
Dan if i remember right, there star alliance chart , charges more miles to Europe then to israel from the US , is that right ?
Dan, this only works for tacking on the partner airlines as you mentioned, but just to be clear this is only for mileage redemption from United accounts, NOT from Krisflyer points balance?
Dan, can you explain how many miles will be a rt NYC_TLV in economy?
I notice Singapore does not fly from ORD, but they do partner with Jetblue to get you ORD/JFK/FRA on a paid ticket. Will they take StarAlliance miles to fly ORD/JFK/FRA/TLV using Jetblue. singapore and lufthansa?
What is the conversion rate from Amex to Singapore Airlines? If it’s 1 to 1 it means for 150k points I fly in suites to and from Europe and Business on Lufthansa?
From Tlv to Fankfurt there is no good connection flights to NY.
@High end hobo:
Post if you call to find out.
@MeirS:
Try and let us know.
@Chaim:
With 8 people you might want to stick to Hybrid points rather than trying to find award space.
@Charles:
Just login and click redeem miles.
Can’t search for partner awards on their site, so search on United.com for Star Alliance availability.
@david:
Yes.
@Marland:
No.
This post is only talking about using Singapore miles.
@Peter:
37.5K each way.
@aaron:
You can’t redeem on JetBlue, but you can fly United from ORD-NYC.
@Dovid:
1:1.
Yes.
@Ed:
Take a stopover.
@Ed:
thats right, cus they leavint 820am in the morning from fra
@david:
Yes for Premium Cabin.
In Economy, Europe is cheaper.
For the past few days I’ve been searching and playing on different dates/options on SQ website for SFO-HKG. Found it strange that there’s only $23.xx total taxes & fees, usually it’s more than $300. So I thought there must be a glitch. Today when I got the email, I think they must be in the middle of configuring the surcharge thing and some routes have shown NO surcharge and some still have. Dan – would you rather save on money or the miles (on biz class & higher)?
just searched from JFK-FRANKFURT-TLV on partner flight and they wanted $500+ in taxes…
How do you avoid that on a partner flight?
@Anonymous:
It’s not 3/23 yet.
If I want to fly JFK-TLV united business via Singapore miles is business award on united enough or it needs to be available on business saver award?
One way?
how many segments of Star Alliance are allowed to attach on SQ flight? example UA- sna-sfo, SQ sfo-sin EVA sin-tpe ? is this legal with new chart ?
I just checked a business saver 1 way JFK-FRA is 57,500 not 48,875
I’m Sorry I clicked on it to find the lower rate
The FRA-TLV leg, do you need to recheck the luggage, since SA reward was used?
Thanks for info Dan but how do I book FRA JFK or other way around? There’s no availability st all December 17 through February. Seems impossible?l to find. Any tips?
Also can I do Manchester on the A350 to Houston to JFK?
Also can I book the whole thing from Tel Aviv via Manchester to JFK since it’ll be like 4 connections I think? (TLV connecting to X connecting to MAN to IAH to JFK/EWR), would that still be 57500?
Thanks
@Charles:
Would appreciate as well
if i book a ticket in coach with 20k virgin america points on Singapore JFK-FRA could it also be combined with a connecting flight to TLV?
thanks
@yisroel m: I was thinking about buying that award ticket but how are you getting from FRA-TLV-JFK? The cost doesn’t make it worthwhile.
@Anonymous:
maybe if you could combine with another star alliance award for FRA-TLV TLV-FRA
@Anonymous: and that is….?
How about a European connection how much will it be after 3/23
JFK-FRA-LHR?
And how many points is it now?
The system has been updated taxes are $23.60 jfk-fra
are there any other airlines that they dont charge the fuel surcharge other than united? for example Turkish or Swiss?
thanks
Baruch
