You can get $15 off $300 of Visa gift cards from Office Max or Office Depot stores from today through 3/14.

Use your Chase Ink Cash Card or Ink Plus card and get 5 points per dollar spent. Office supply stores never charge a fee for retailer gift cards such as Amazon and hundreds more, but these Visa gift cards can be used anywhere!

Some stores may limit you to 1 transaction, but some stores won’t have any limits at all, which would allow you to scale the savings quite nicely.

If you buy 2 $200 Visa gift cards in store you’ll pay $398.90 including fees and you’ll earn 2,020 points (worth $30-$40) by charging it to an Ink Plus or Ink Cash card.

If you buy a $100 and a $200 Visa gift cards in store you’ll pay $297.90 including fees and you’ll earn 1,515 points by charging it to an Ink Plus or Ink Cash card.

You can use the gift cards to buy money orders at Walmart or at various grocery stores and gas stations. Just use the last 4 digits of the card as the PIN number to cash them out.

Or you can donate the gift card to charity and get a receipt for the full face value.

Or you can give away a gift card as a wedding or Bar Mitzvah gift.

Or you can always use it for everyday spending while earning 5% or 5 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar everywhere!

Where in NYC can you pay for MO with gift cards?

  2. zev

Dan, when buying a MO, is there any way to combine the GCs so that it can all go on 1 MO?

  3. Maxi

Dan many of your readers are from NY, NJ area. There are NO Warmarts which accept gift cards to purchase money orders.

Tell them it’s a debit card… not a gift card..

      • Britt Reed

I have pointed to the words “Gift Card” and the clerk points to the word “Debit”. Guess who wins?

    • Bob

Can anyone explain why they won’t accept it , since it works just like a debit card? Just trying to understand the stores perspective

      • Britt Reed

I would think that it is in the store’s best interest to sell Money Orders. The only thing that I can think of is it may give the appearance of money laundering.

Can I load it onto an online Home Depot account or go to a Western Union and get cash?

  5. RC

Has anyone successfully cashed these out anywhere in the Chicago area?

    • Britt Reed

Chicago area Walmarts no longer accept gift cards for money orders. If someone knows of an exception to this, I sure would be interested in hearing about it.

I see wherever your readership grows, the stores quickly catch on and limit the purchases. I live in Michigan (Detroit suburbs), I used to buy $1200 in 3 transactions. Noone said a word. Today, they wouldn’t let. Probably not coincidental that the guy in front of me was buying GC’s as well

Here in FL , some stores refund you cash if you pay with a debit card. So if you buy something with a visa gift card you might be able to return in and get cash…

  8. ATARAH

any ideas how to cash them out. local Walmart not accept for MO purchases.

  9. Joe

Dan- ever heard of this one?
This was a first – store manager said the variable amount GC’s (where you can load anywhere from $20-200) can only be purchased with CASH, due to “fraud” ( he explained people steal CC’s and buy GC’s). Never had this before. Either way- can anyone explain why it’s any different on a fixed amt GC (flat $100 or $200 etc)???

    • Jc

Just walked in and got the same thing. Low hanging fruit drying up

      • Joe

Seems to vary by store though. Another local store didn’t mention this one but they won’t let more than one discount while they used to be fine with a few

Dan; have you heard of this new policy?!

Second store I tried already, same thing. They said gift cards can only be paid for in cash due to “fraud”. Asked what the fraud is- manager said it can be a fake card, it’s from corporate….. So I can buy out the entire store with my fake card but not GC’s 🙂 Is this the new order or just a temporary hurdle?
