Qatar QMiles will be converting to Avios in late March, joining IAG Group’s British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Vueling. Qatar is the largest shareholder in IAG, so moving to Avios is a natural move.
Miles will be converted at a 1:1 ratio and Qatar says the mileage requirements won’t go up. We’ll have to wait and see what will happen with fuel surcharges.
Qatar has some decent reward options, like Qatar Qsuites business class awards from JFK to Doha for 70K miles, JFK to the Maldives for 85K and JFK to Cape Town for 95K miles.
You can redeem AA miles for Qatar Qsuites business class from JFK to Doha or the Maldives for the same 70K miles and JFK to South Africa is just 75K AA miles with no fuel surcharges, though only Marriott points transfer into AA miles, making them harder to get other than from their own credit cards.
Hopefully you will be able to transfer Qatar Avios to/from British Airways and Iberia Avios. That would also open up the possibility of being able to transfer Citi points to British Airways, as those transfer to Qatar currently, but not into Avios. It would also open up the possibility of being able to transfer AMEX, Capital One, and Chase points to Qatar, as those transfer into British Airways/Iberia Avios, but not to Qatar.
You can currently transfer Citi or Marriott points into Qatar points. You can transfer those points with cards like  Citi Premier or Capital One Venture X.
Qatar QSuites is one of the highest rated business class products around. They can be configured into a closed suite for 1, 2, or even 4 passengers! They even provide delicious Hermolis kosher meals onboard!
As mentioned previously, you can enroll here in Qatar QMiles by 3/31/22 and get 2,500 miles instantly, or another 5,000 miles for flying on a paid Qatar flight by 9/30/22.
Note that you must be at least 18 to have a QMiles account.
If you enroll 6 people and you can convert the Qatar Avios to British Airways Avios, you will then be able to create a BA household account and merge those miles together for 15K Avios in one account, enough for 2 free one-way domestic short haul award tickets! Note that if you do enroll in a household account, you won’t be able to redeem Avios for anyone outside of your household.
Will you signup for a Qatar account?
Dan, can’t seem to find anywhere that says you could transfer Capital One points to Qatar. Any idea if that’s really possible?
Copy/paste error from the previous Qatar post. Unfortunately it’s no longer possible, but hopefully it will be possible again next month if we can combine Avios!
not working
Will I get the extra 5K miles fir flying a BA (revenue) ticket operated by Qatar?
(BTW where would you recommend crediting the miles for that flight to?)
Dan,
I’ve created my new account and gotten the 2500 points. But I don’t understand how to link that to my existing British Airways account to actually be able to use these 2500 points.
Can you please explain how you convert Qatar Avios to British Airways Avios?
Read the first line of this post 🙂
Can you family pool your QMiles before the conversion to Avios? E.g., pool 6x QMiles accounts and then transfer all 15K to one Avios account later?
Dan – are you sure on the requirement to be 18 for an account. I see verbiage “We recommend that all parents/guardians become third party nominees for any Members who are under 18 joining a Household Account. Please see the Manage My Account section of the Members’ Area on ba.com for more information on third party nominees.”
The requirement is for Qatar, not BA.
Will these miles extend my expiring Avios (when they eventually get converted to Avios)?
Nahhh… There’s easier ways of funding terrorism
Correct, but at least everyone can get their non Gebrokts food while supporting Amalek.
Here we go again. Unlimited free miles.
The promo code here and on their signup page is expired, even though it advertises it on their signup page – any suggestions?
