“You will get 15 elite night credits”
That means towards any status that I need to complete?
Yes.
Will those 15 nights be credited once in 2018 and then again in 2019?
If I fly lots with United ( book with points), as well as stay lots with SPG/marriott. Do you think I get more value using the United 1.5 per dollar credit card, or is it better to use the SPG thru Aug?
I would focus everyday spending on SPG until August.
Can you add which cards are not subject to Chase 5/24?
Done.
It should be noted that the Chase Marriott Premier also allows you to earn 1 elite night for every $3,000 spent. It is important because after 8/1 there will be no card you can sign up for that has that option and it could come in handy if you need fewer than 25 nights to reach platinum. For example, if you have any marriott or SPG card you will get 15 elite night credits and only need 35 more nights to reach platinum. If you don’t travel much and only stay another 15 nights in Marriott hotels either on points or cash, that leaves 20 nights more you need for platinum. With this card you would only need to spend $60,000 get those remaining 20 nights elite credit, vs. $75,000 on the Ritz card or the new SPG Luxury card with those options.
Added, thanks.
Dan,
Will the elite nights awarded via spending 3k on this card apply towards your confirmed suites or still only actual stays ?
What is 15 elite night credits?
Credit towards earning elite status.

Will card 4 and 5, CMP and CMPP both be available at the same time to apply with one pull?
#4 will likely be gone by the time that #5 is offered.
In your humble opinion do you think it’s better to get the Ritz Carlton card now or wait?
I’d probably wait.
What chase marriott cards are/are not subject to 5/24? And any rumors about the new ones?

Is it worth transferring your Amex points 0.5:1 to Starwood prior to August 1?
How do you do that in the US?
I’m from Canada, so we are able to transfer 2:1 Amex to SPG. Is that worth it I your opinion given the changes made?
BTW – for Canadian cards, we can no longer get the sign up bonus (20k SPG points) as of today. All they offer is $100 credit statement for $1500 spent in 3 months.
Canada questions are out of my wheelhouse.
I have no idea what the alternative options are.
Perhaps try starting a DDF thread.
Any updates on Canadian cards?
Out of my wheelhouse, sorry!
With the Hilton points devalued, I’ve been using the SPG card religiously. Yet, the 33.33% devaluation is too much for me. In August, I am gone! As sad as it may be, 2% cash back cards are starting to look attractive. The banks are trying to make $450 the standard fee.
This kills 2%
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/chase-quadfecta-least-23-arent-rightbut/
I get it. It is good for maximizing. Yet, for layman (and spouse) is not always easy to remember where to use what card.
What do you think about the Amex Everyday Preferred Card – getting 1.5 per – and sitting on points until they have some cool promo like 30% to Jetblue transfer?
Dan. I get using spg for everyday spend now until August to rack up points. I’ve never had a Marriott card bcz I’m spg person. Should I open one? Confused on that part. TIA!
Nothing wrong with another sign up bonus.
I have the Chase Marriott Premier card but I’m way over 5/24 now. Do you think I’ll still qualify for an upgrade to the Chase Marriott Premier Plus card despite the fact 5/24 applies to the new card?
Yes.
Dan, are you sure the Chase Marriott Business card will be discontinued? On the Marriott credit card page, it says new benefits for Chase Marriott Business card will be coming in August (like the Ritz-Carlton card).
That is what I was told, but nothing is 100% until it happens.
The benefits will be upgraded for grandfathered cardholders.
So my current SPG card will be “grandfathered” ? or it will become a “new card” in 2019?
Grandfathered
I’m really surprised the ~$100 Chase cards give annual free night up to 25k, while the ~$100 Amex cards give 35k. How’s this business decision reached?..
It’s only 25K on the cards being discontinued.
True.. Just a little sad the Chase Marriott business cost $99 yet offers 25k (compared to the new Plus $95k but 35k free night). Anyway we shouldn’t get too greedy 🙂
Any info on whether the Chase Marriott Premier Plus card will be considered the same family such that a SUB on Chase Marriott Premier would make one ineligible for a bonus on the Plus a la Southwest’s new rules?
I think this is important before people think about signing up now!
While existing customers with the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card won’t be eligible to sign up for the new product as a new customer and receive the 100,000 point bonus there are going to be targeted upgrade incentives offered between 10,000 and 50,000 points (though those amounts may be adjusted).
If I sign up today for the Chase Marriott Premier card will I still be eligible for the signup bonus on the Chase Marriott Premier PLUS card on 5/3?
The next best option is the chase Freedom unlimited with the saphire reserve. But that’s a personal card, since I only use my business card (because they don’t report balances) I don’t see any good option for an everyday business card.
if I dont have the spg consumer should I get it now?
Sure
Dan, are you sure about your comments that the existing Chase Marriott Premier personal card and the existing Chase Marriott Business card will only earn a category 1-4 annual “free night” certificate in the new Marriott program? Have you verified that? Or are you saying that because the annual certificate from those cards currently is up to category 5 (which is 25K points per night under the existing program) but 25K points per night will become category 4 under the new program. This is the first info I’ve seen that the existing Chase Marriott cards will earn only a category 1-4 certificate under the new program. If this is correct, it will make upgrading to the new Chase Marriott Premier Plus card more attractive. The Plus card will only have a $10 higher annual fee, but a category 1-5 certificate would be much more valuable than a category 1-4 certificate.
Yes.
Dan, why does it say on the Marriott premier application page “1 FREE NIGHT STAY
at a Category 1-5 hotel every year after your account anniversary*”
I’m confused. Is it cat 4 or 5?
https://www.dansdeals.com/points-travel/marriott/guesstimating-marriott-travel-packages-will-work-august-take-advantage-marriotts-lucrative-milesnights-packages-now/
Thanks for replying. Based on this information, the legacy Chase Marriott Premier card will only provide a category 1-4 certificate in the future while both legacy SPG cards and also the new Chase Marriott Premier Plus card will provide a category 1-5 cert. 1-5 should be a lot more valuable than 1-4, so it’s time to alter my card portfolio. I had canceled my SPG personal card a few years ago while retaining the SPG business. Back then I saw no reason to pay both annual fees. But today I put in an app for a new SPG personal (though I may not get the signup bonus). This now puts me at 4/24 (perilously close). I’ll hope for a good upgrade offer to the new Chase Plus personal card. Likely I will sooner or later cancel my Chase Marriott Business card. I’d much rather have the category 5 certificates from the other cards.
Should I sign up for the existing Marriott chase card or wait for the new Plus card? Thanks so much
Dan
I got the Ritz Carlton CC specifically to spend 75k and get Plat with Marriot +SPG. +United Gold +Delta status.
1. I see in your post, that once I spend 10k to get gold, I will get Plat anyway?
2. How will this affect the rest of my cheshbon. ( I already spent 60k, am in the home strech…)
Thanks!!
It’s not clear how long the Plat will last from $10K in spending
United gold or silver ?
“Not subject to 5/24” means doesn’t count as one of the 5, or that you can get it even if you’re over 5/24?
You can get it even if over 5/24.
will the free night expire ?

I tried looking for info on this. How often can you get spg business and get bonus points.
Officially only once. Unofficially every 6 years or so.
Presently I have Marriott Gold through the Amex Platinum, but you wrote that will be going away in August. Is the Ritz card a good way to maintain the benefits of Marriott Gold after the merger?
Gold post merger won’t be worth enough to justify having that card for that status alone.
However, if one achieves Marriott Gold before August (i.e., through Ritz) then shouldn’t that convert into Platinum on 8/1 because it is not being matched from SPG Gold?
It seems worth noting that the new certificates may only be good for category 3 (Marriott) and 4 (SPG) during peak times, whatever those turn out to be.
What is that based off of?
Cat 4 peak nights cost 30k, and cat 5 peak nights cost 40k. It will depend on exactly how the fine print of the certificate is worded.
They’ve said most nights will be at the standard rate, so I’m comfortable calling it valid up to cat 5.
If I already have one of the AMEX currewnt cards and come August I apply to the Luxury card. Will I be eligible for a sign-up bonus? (Even though we don’t know if there is even going to be any…)
So is the chase marriot premier business card a better option then the new chase premier plus only if ur planning to keep it for one year ? It seems that u get 75k points and no annual fee versus the new chase one is rumored to be 100k bonus but $99 annual fee. Both get a feee night by new card offers night up 35k points
Dan, Will the 15 elite night credits with the new Chase Marriott card be credited in 2018 and again in 2019? I’ve read that it will only be credited starting in 2019. Which is correct!? Thanks!
