Last month, the US closed their borders to foreign nationals that were in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi due to the Omicron variant.
With the variant now spreading locally across the globe, the US announced that the border will reopen on 12/31.
US officials justified the ban by saying that it delayed the spread in the US, which gave time for the variant to be better studied.
I was in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia in October and there has never been a better time to visit. We had the magnificent Victoria Falls and entire safari resorts to ourselves at rock bottom pricing!

The change was made to clarify the always factual statement that vaccines are not and have never been 100% effective. However, if someone is prepared to distrust a source, in this case the CDC, nothing could convince that person that the change was not done for malevolent purposes.
