AMEX confirmed to me today that a Gift Card purchase of at least $50 from Amazon will qualify for the 1,000 bonus Starpoints promo!
You can buy an Amazon gift card and have it emailed to yourself immediately. You can then enter the gift certificate code into your Amazon account (via the “my account” page) and the credit will be there the next time that you want to make any Amazon purchase.

Amazon gift cards no longer have any expiration date, in fact Amazon has retroactively reinstated all expired gift cards that were purchased after 10/01/05!!!
