Sorry, but this is not a good deal.
    1) It has been at least 21 months since that phone went for the full price of $1000. (Except when Amazon is trying to make a bad deal look good.)
    2) This is a phone is over two years old, meaning it has less then a year of security updates remaining.
If you want a Pixel, save and additional $50 and get a 4a or get a 4a5G for $60 more.

    • Dan

Perhaps, though the 3 was Google’s last attempt at a real flagship. Pixels afterward have been poor imitations and haven’t tried to be flagship devices.

      • Matisyahu

Respectfully, being a two year old phone the 3XL’s specification are no longer flagship level and are comparable to a mid-range phone. If you want your phone to remain secure you’d have to purchase a new device in a year which is an important cost to consider.
While the budget Pixel 4a is missing IP68 it has more memory then the 3XL and the same camera. Plus as the newer model the 4a will get new feature updates for the next few years.

        • Josh

You are correct, much better off spending $350 on a Pixel 4a versus a 3XL for $400.

          • Dan

4a has a smaller battery, not water resistant, not dust proof, worse gorilla glass, smaller screen, lower resolution, no fast quick charging, no wireless charging…

          • Josh

Valid points. I will miss the wireless charging, but having the security updates for longer are more important, IMO.

Dan, Respectfully, I have to agree with the Chevra on this one. Been waiting for the 4a to go on sale to get one for my daughter for her year in Israel. If you ever see those go on sale, PLEASE let us know. Too pricey for me at full retail. Thanks!

@Matisyahu You seem really well-versed in the phone world, so I hope you don’t mind if I ask a related question (though nothing to do with the Pixel). Where can I find super-affordable deals on a used Galaxy S7, S8, or S9 (reputable seller)?

          Thank you,

          -S

You should not buy a phone that was released a few years ago. I was not trying to give Dan a hard time, its simply a bad idea.

There are some great low to mid-range phones that came out this year and will be supported for years to come.

However, if you still choose to buy an older phone I would look at Swappa as a reputable place to purchase used phones. Keep in mind using these phones come with added danger. They will be running older versions of the Android operating system and therefore are less secure. This makes them more dangerous for banking and more likely to get malware and therefore unsavory popup ads.

          • S

Matisyahu- Thank you for responding so quickly!! I was looking at older, used because I have under $100 (one hundred) to spend since being out of a job since June, and my current phone on it’s last legs. I have a newbie question- can I just download a newer version of the Android OS for better security, or is that a bad idea?

If it is indeed not a good idea, are any of the low-mid range phones you referenced above- in my budget at all? I’m afraid to even ask..

          • Matisyahu

Sorry about your difficulties. I did some research and found three options:
            1) You can get this for $50 at Fry’s. It looks like the phone will upgrade to Android 10 immediately and should get Android 11 sometime in 2021.
            https://www.frys.com/product/10006091?source=google
            2) You may also be able to buy the Samsung Galaxy A01 from your carrier.
            3) Not the best choice but also $100 without running ancient software is the https://www.nokia.com/phones/en_us/nokia-1-3#buy

None of these phones will be super-powered machines or great camera but they will get you a working phone without leaving yourself open to other problems.

          • S

I sincerely appreciate the options you posted! My current, broken phone has 32GB of storage, my kids used it for lots of pictures (we couldn’t back it up because Samsung Switch never worked on our old mac, so it all lived on the phone. I wasn’t sure an OTG with flashdrive would work to backup/transfer files). Are any of the 3 phones above expandable in terms of storage (I saw they’re all 32gig)?

Otherwise, what are your thoughts on the: OnePlus, Moto G, Note 9, or Moto G7? If any are decent, I can wait try and wait till prices drop on those.

          • Matisyahu

Note 9 is a 2.5 year old phone. My advice is to still not get an old phone as it will quickly become insecure and could cause problems.

You can easily backup pictures using Google Photos or another service like Dropbox and use its automatic photo backup. Then access their webpage and download it on your computer. Most phones do not have expandable storage. Since you need the cheapest phone you will have the least amount of storage.

          • S

That does make sense that the cheapest phone will have the least amount of storage 🙂

I’ve tried google photos, Dropbox and OneDrive. I always had errors from my phone, even when trying over the course of a few days 🙁

Would an OTG cord work to somehow transfer files from the S6 to a computer?

Also, any chance those Moto models are decent (G and G7)?

          • Matisyahu

The phone may be too old to be supported by those services. Another reason look at a recent model phone so the phone lasts longer.
You don’t need a OTG cord. If you have a Windows machine you can connect a normal USB cord and access the phone like an external hard drive. A Google search can likely find a number of websites and videos with instructions. Same thing for a Mac.

          • S

Thank you. Yes, I tried to connect to the older mac with a usb cord, but it only gave me error messages (tried over many months, with different usb-setting on the phone). I’m going to try on a neighbor’s windows machine. If that doesn’t work, is there any other way to get get info off the S6?

          • Matisyahu

            Send Emails.
            Log into flickr.com
Resolve to try and make sure images are regularly updated in the future.

      Totally agree! I’d get the 4a 5g, for 459

BH has the Pixel 3 XL 64GB Black for $349

Where’s the best place for me to ask about super-affordable deals on a used Galaxy S7, S8, or S9 (reputable seller)? If there a certain place on the forum?

    Thanks,

    • Y
