Here is an easy tutorial is set this device up with Google Voice for a free landline phone.

-Works with Google Voice
-Easy to Set-Up Using OBiTALK.com
-Also Supports T.38 Fax and SIP Bring Your Own Device Services like Anveo Callcentric, Voip.ms, etc.
-Works with Up to Four (4) VoIP Services Across One (1) Phone Port

Quick FAQ’s about this device:
-It costs $0 per month after you buy the machine.
-A phone number is free with Google Voice.
-It works with any regular landline phone. For example a VTech Dect 6.0 cordless phone with caller ID is $14.89 or a VTech cordless phone with Caller ID and speakerphone is $19.95. A 2 handset system with caller ID and speakerphone is $32.
-It makes regular outgoing and incoming calls with caller ID.
-Calls are free from anywhere in the world to US and Canada numbers.
-You can call international numbers for a little as as 1 cent per minute. Israel is 2 cents per minute for landlines and 10 cents for cell phones. All rates are listed here.
-You can only port a cell phone number to Google, so if you want another number you’ll have to first port it to a prepaid cell service and then port it to google. Porting in your old number costs $20.
-You don’t need any other phone service, just broadband (DSL/FIOS/Cable) internet service with a router. If you don’t have a router you can buy this WiFi adapter to allow the OBi to work over WiFi.
-You do not need a computer.
-You do not need a phone jack.

I use it and its awesome when it works. Does anyone else using this have a issue of people not hearing you or hanging up once in a while?

  2. Qwerty

@Sam: call your ISP and ask them to turn off SIP ALG and h.255.0 settings. That should solve your problems.

  3. Shmuel

It says that the promotional code cannot be applied… any reason why ??

  4. Sam

@Qwerty: thanks. I’ll try in morning and report back for other people. Thanks

Just realize there is no caller id. I have it and I have no issues at all. I did sign up with callcentric.com for caller id but it does not give all caller id I think only those that sign up with callcentric. If you pay a few dollars a month you can get the obiextras which you can get all your google numbers linked to your phone which will have a sort of caller id. If you forward your home phone to cellphone number which means both home phone and cellphone will ring and whoever picks up first will answer the call then if you have smartlist on your cellphone you will also have caller id on your cellphone. if you have any questions you can email me and I will try and help you out as much as I can.

  6. Yl

Anyone know how much data this uses?

  7. Chesky

Any way to get a landline number I can port a number into Google Voice through a cell phone company as posted above, but where would i get landline phone number? Any way to make a quick line setup?

  8. CJ

I have the 100 any reason to upgrade?

  9. John

I currently use magicjack and it dosnt have ands mj is 35$+tax a year

  10. Steve

Does it work FROM Canada for use in Canada with Google voice?

  11. DZ the Telzer

I want to try this, but if I’m not happy I would like to port back from GV back to Verizon Landline is that possible I called Verizon twice and one time they told me there is now way to port to Verizon landline and the other time they told me forsure I can port from GV to Verizon landline. Anyone know what the real answer is.

  12. Anonymous

Can I still use my regular answering machine, or will the call automatically go through the GV answering machine.

  13. Steve

    @Yl:

I believe it depends on the codec you set. Between 0.3 and 1.2 megabytes per minute, roughly.

  14. Yoel Stern

can I have two lines with this device?

  15. Anonymous

@Sam: Maybe they just pretend to not hear you and are hanging up on purpose because they don’t want to talk to you?

    Just Kidding!

  16. yossi

i dont have internet in my home any idea the cheapest plan will cost me ? i live in brooklyn
or could i connect it to optimum wifi ?
    thanks

@yossi: Straight Talk Home Phone. It’s $15 a month for unlimited service plus a couple dollars of tax. It’s best for Senior Citizens that don’t have internet (or others that don’t have the internet). It runs on the Verizon Wireless network and has battery backup so it works even if the power goes out. I set this up for a senior citizen that doesn’t use computers and they’ve been very happy with this. Walmart.com often sell refurbished models for free (you just pay for the first month of service of $15).

  18. pcgeek

    @Shmuel: Probably wrong seller
@Ronit Miller: I have it set up with callcentric and google voice and caller ID works fine
    @Anonymous: It’ll go through GV
@Yoel Stern: No. That’s what the OBI202 is for 🙂
@Sam: Usually an issue either with your ISP settings like Qwerty said, or possibly a router issue on your end. That was my personal experience; rebooted my router and it fixed it temporarily. The issue was resolved by replacing the router (optimum) which was flaky and would drop enough packets to cause major call issues especially on incoming calls

  19. Sam

@pcgeek: tried calling optimum but they said they can’t change the settings. My router is a tplink and will call them to see if they can do it. Internet works fine. And calls before I had obi where fine too. Thanks

  20. Ronit

pcgeek: Do you live in NY because I think in NY callcentric works fine but not in lakewood. If you say that the caller Id works everywhere so what did I do wrong. I have it set up with callcentric and google voice. thanks

  21. Anonymous

@Sam: Power cycle your router by unplugging it, wait 30 seconds and plug back in
@Ronit: I live in Lakewood but requested a NY number since that was free at the time. Not sure if it still is. It would say “free DID “

  22. Anon Imus

@Sam: Optimum is purposely sabotaging ability to use third party VOIP services, they have good reason to, as they too are providers of voice service. This is one reason they are promoting their routers, as this enables them to retain control of the router settings, settings that they will not allow customers access to all. It would be great to see a class action but it probably won’t happen as this is too technical for the average joe and Optimum is fully aware of this.

  23. pcgeek

@Anon Imus: I have optimum and voip works just fine. As far as their router, that’s probably so they can say “we have millions of wifi hotspots”

  24. Moe

I need the OBi202 for its two lines.

Is that model sometimes on sale.

  25. 4yourinfo

I think the title should contain something like via internet…so many people asked me….

  26. m65

  27. dave

just thought i’d weigh in here…
i have 4 different devices being used with 3 different ISPs and all work with caller ID and no settings had to be changed. 2 of the devices are being used with optimum cable and the optimum supplied router from sagemcom and again, no issues!

  28. jake

  30. pcgeek

  31. Shmuli

    Qwerty:
