Goodbye to the Sunpass conundrum.
E-ZPass now works throughout the state of Florida. You can bring your E-ZPass transponder with you on your next trip to Miami and avoid paying usurious rental car toll fees or getting a Sunpass.
While existing E-ZPass transponders will work in Florida, Sunpass users will need to upgrade to Sunpass Pro in order to use their transponder for E-ZPass tolls.
Sunpass conundrum?
It costs $4.95 and available at hundreds of supermarkets and gas stations and takes about 30 seconds to setup online.
If you have a regular sunpass you need to get the PRO for it to work in NY https://www.sunpass.com/en/about/pro.shtml
Does that apply only to Florida State roads, but not local roads that charge a toll?
come to my driveway, we take it all, any form of payment, even credit cards.
Remember that ez pass doesn’t have suction cups like surpass so will have to either hold up for toll or rig something up.
How do people usually keep ezpass on the window in NY?

Velcro strips that NY ez pass sends along with the tags
This will make my daily commute from NYC to Boca so much easier. Thanks!
Thanks! Going there on Thursday and now I can just take my EZPass like a civilized person!
Yuch! Keep that NY garbage up in NY!
This must be Moshiach’s times …
Literally stole the words from my mouth!:)
If I have ezpass & sunpass will I get charged twice?
You can be charged twice and not able to get a refund. Be sure to place one of the tags in a silver envelope or better yet, leave it home.
Great news! Thanks!
If we have ezpass. Can we totally get rid of the sunpass
this may be a dumb question but if we are flying from new york to miami with ezpass in our bags will it get charged when we fly over a toll?
Are you talking about flying 35,000 feet (~6.6 miles) being charged a toll from the ground? No, it’s not possible. You could be even 35 feet away from the toll galley, and it won’t charge the expats (as in, driving on the opposite flow of the roadway, not exiting the expressway, etc)
You don’t have to worry about it from the plane but you can keep it in the RFID blocking bag (silver bag) and it’ll block all toll charges.
Of course, but only if the plane slows down to less than 45MPH before passing the toll booth
Am I the only one that is being charged $1 monthly for my ez pass?
I don’t get charged $1/month for my NY E-ZPass but I do for my NJ one.
I have both NY and NJ since NJ one doesn’t get E-ZPass discount for NY only bridges (Verrazzano, Whitestone, etc) but NY E-ZPass doesn’t offer discount for NJ Turnpike.
(Live in NJ but sometimes go into NYC)
Fees vary by state, but you can get one for free from a state with no fees.
I have from NY. Which state has no fees?
Alabama has no tolls, a republican state, only dem state charge tolls
if you get mta ezpass NY not port authority ezpass from NY you won’t be charged $1 a month
Some in NY also have no fees. Mine is from the New York State Thruway Authority, and there are no monthly fees, and you still get the same EZ Pass discount across New York State, even on other tolls besides the Thruway. So I’d recommend switching to that.
Tried signing up online and it seems like it will charge a $1 monthly fee.
Can you get it online?

When you sign up in NY they automatically send you tags according to where you live, no option of choosing NYS Authority or Port Authority
MA has them for free with no fees. Won’t get NY discounts though.
If you get a NY state ezpass from Triboro bridge authority or NYS thruway authority, there are no fees. The only NY ezpass authority that charges a few are the ones from the Port Authority
Triboro no longer issues them I think. I think now you can only get from NY service center
How do you get ones of those?
How do you decide where you get it from?
When applying don’t select any plan, as that would get you the port authority that has a fee. after receiving you can add any plan
what if I already have port authority plan easy to switch?
You need to cancel your plan return the tags etc.. sign up with a NY/Brooklyn address (not NJ) also don’t apply any port authority plans at sign up – tags should come from the mta once your signed up you can change address and plans
you can also just go to any MTA bridge or tunnel that might still have a toll booth and buy the prepaid ezpass there and then call up ezpass and change it to a regular account with a credit card on file…
but are there disadvantages to that?
Manny – if you use the Verrazano – you want a NY EZ Pass. I live in NJ and got the NY EZ Pass just for the Verrazano discount that NJ EZ Pass and other states’ EZ Passes don’t get.
There’s a discount on the Turnpike with A NJ E-ZPass. Also I believe all MTA bridges tunnels are cheaper with a NY E-ZPass
How much is the NJ discount for the turnpike? I use the turnpike and MTA bridges all the time, and I’m trying to figure out which ez-pass would be more worth it.
and to think i got my uni pass 3 month ago
I believe uni pass will work in Florida. Read the link posted.
amazing timing, im moving there next month!
Me too
Does it give the same discount on certain Florida roads that SunPass gives?
Will my Ipass from IL work in Fl now as well?
The question is do we need to add the rental car license plate to the account or not?
EZ Pass side or on Sunpass?
To be on the safe side, I would.
To be on the safe side, I would not lest one forget to remove it.
You can set the license plate to expire when your rental does
Is the rate charged for sunpass cheaper?
What’s South Carolina’s problem??
Which toll roads have you traveled on in SC?
Maybe no tolled roads?
and i literally bought a sunpass LAST WEEK…
How will you be able to use your ezpass in your rental car without being charged twice?
If affixed properly they will only charge yours. The rental car platepass is only used as a backup
