Staples is offering $5 off $200 Visa gift cards through 4/13 in-store only.

Use your Chase Ink Cash Business Card or Ink Plus card and get 5 points per dollar spent. Or use your AMEX SimplyCash Card to earn 5% cash back.

You can purchase as many cards as your store will allow in one transaction and the fee will be reduced from $6.95 to $1.95. Some stores may have a limit of 1 while other stores may have no limits.

If you buy 10 of the $200 Visa gift cards for $2,019.50 you’ll earn 10,098 Chase Ultimate Rewards points by charging it to an Ink Cash card. If you use your points at an average value of 2 cents each, then that’s like getting $202 back!

You can use the gift cards to buy money orders at Walmart or at various grocery stores and gas stations. Just use the last 4 digits of the card as the PIN number to cash them out.

Or you can donate the gift card to charity and get a receipt for the full face value while earning 5 points per dollar.

Or you can give away a gift card as a wedding or Bar Mitzvah gift.

Or you can always use it for everyday spending while earning 5% or 5 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar everywhere!

Yes, I think this is a bad thing. I go big on the fee-free visas at Staples and don’t bother with the deal at Office Depot where $300 of visas with some cash back still costs you a few dollars. Why pay $1.95 for 1000 UR points when they could be gotten free? I agree we should boycott.

Staples is downgrading the $7 off to $5 off.
Seeing how well it will perform.

So we should all exhibit restraint and wait. Let them see they don’t sell at only $5 off.

Anyone have any insight if these deals will be replacing the “no fee on VGC” deals? I loaded up a few weeks ago on MGC and ready for more. Margin at $1.95 is less appealing.

Since few people would actually buy Chase points for 2 cents each, I think a more “real world” valuation of them would be 1.25 cents. So buying and liquidating 10 gift cards would net you (in the real world) about $120. Is that worth your time? I’d say it depends. What it depends on is how easily you can liquidate these gift cards. If you want to buy money orders with them, I’d say you’re likely to wear out your welcome at the supermarket (or similar establishment) pretty quickly, and maybe you’re better off liquidating other gift cards (like those worth $500).

Why would they be worth less than the 1.5 cents you can redeem them for any travel with CSR?
Typically you can do better than that, but that would be the floor for the value.

Most folks don’t have that card and can only redeem for 1.25 cents with Chase. And, of course, you could usually get a further additional discount if you paid with “cash” another way. I think many people would buy Chase points at 1.25 cents. I don’t think many people would pay more for them. That’s why I think they’re worth 1.25 cents in the real world.

I’d say most travel “hackers” do have that card. Can always upgrade to it for the redemption and downgrade later as well.

Hyatt and United points are typically worth well more than 1.25, so I’d disagree there as well.

      • Zal

Because many people don’t travel enough to redeem all their earned points.

        • gemarakop

this is obviously for people who plan on redeeming points not selling

@ 4. No shame in redeeming for 1.5% with CSR.
i guess i’l upgrade my CSP to Reserve and downgrade united club to the no AF

if its not worth anymore to transfer to united then its not worth the hassle of buying them for MS

      1. That’s not until November.
      2. We don’t know how things will play out, everything is a guess at this point.
      3. I’d be very surprised if no outsized values existed.
      4. No shame in redeeming for 1.5% with CSR.
