Amazon Kills Automatic 20% Subscription Discount On Diapers For Prime Members

In 2010-2011 when Amazon was fighting Marc Lore’s Diapers.com for diaper dominance they offered 30% off diapers and additional codes in magazines that allowed people to get dozens of free cases of diapers.

After Lore was forced to sell out to Amazon, the Amazon discount dropped to 20%, required a Prime membership, and then required a subscription for the savings.

Luckily, the subscription was able to be expedited.

Going forward, Amazon will only give a 5% subscription discount on diapers, unless you have Prime Family membership and receive at least 5 or more subscription items in your order. If you have less than 5 subscription items in your order you’ll only get 5% off diapers, though if you add more subscription items to your order then the 20% off savings will be applied retroactively.

If you order more than 1 case of diapers at a time you can make a separate subscription for each one and each will count towards the 5 items required.

It can definitely make sense to add cheap filler subscription items before your items ship each month. If you have 5 items then you will get 15% off instead of 5% off most items and you will get 20% off diapers.

Good filler items include:

What filler items do you use to get to 5 subscription items?

after talking to amazon , “as long as you don’t change your S&S and you had the item there before the change you will still get the %20 off on dippers ‘

what if i have a s&s but will like to change the delivery date ?
      i will loos the 20% ?

This should be true. I have a few really old S&S items from the good old days when everything was 15% off. They still show as 15%, even on months when I have less than 5 items.

“If you order more than 1 case of diapers at a time you can make a separate subscription for each one and each will count towards the 5 items required.”

If this is true- then can’t we just avoid the whole filler item thing by just ordering 5 cases of diapers?? Each as a separate subscription? That would solve this whole problem, no? Sure 5 cases is a lot, but in many cases you’ll need them eventually anyway…

Yes you can do this, I do it all the time. Then if I find additional items I want in the month, I can cancel extra subscriptions I bought just to fulfill the 5 minimum. For example-buy 5 separate subscriptions of diapers. If dish soap you need comes along and you really don’t need 5 orders of diapers, get the dish soap and cancel one diaper order. And so on. I have yet to have a month to buy something I didn’t need just to fill a minimum.

    • Dan

Yes, but most people don’t order 5 cases at a time.

I could be wrong on this- but isn’t Costco cheaper for diapers anyway, even with the 20% savings? If so, is this really such a huge loss? And if Amazon really is cheaper- then won’t dealing with the filler items be worth it?

    From amazon:
    Here’s the update.
Starting August 2, 2017 Amazon Prime members can only get 20% off diaper subscriptions when they have 5 or more subscriptions delivered on the same day to the same address. If you had an existing diaper subscription before that date will still get 20% off the subscription (without needing 5 or more subscriptions delivered on the same day) unless they cancel it. Amazon Prime members can also now get up 20% off subscriptions for baby food (excluding formula) when they have 5 or more subscriptions delivered on the same day to the same address.

Do the subscriptions all have to ship to the same address to count towards the 5+ items? Also, is there an additional cost to join Prime Family from regular Prime, and would you do it Dan?

    • Dan

Needs to go to the same address.
      No cost.

  6. Sam

@dan When does this take effect?

  7. Eli

Does this take affect immediately ?

  8. Shaul

How does one switch from regular prime to prime family?

  9. Morris

I get a bunch of other stuff anyway so no issue for me. I get the pampers wipes the hefty garbage bags and sometimes q tips or other deals that you post for 1 month and once the price goes up I cancel

  10. Michael

I may end my Prime membership over this.

  11. Eli

Oh well, guess my days of ordering diapors from amazon are over, it was good while it lasted…

    • Dan

Don’t subscribe to other items or want to deal with filler items?

      • AG

Are you able to cancel the subscription of the filler items before shipping and still have the 20% on diapers,?

        • Dan

No, you need 5+ items to ship for the savings.

  12. Jared

    Any recommendation for diapers now?

  13. Diapers

So if you get one box a month you can still be ok?

    • Dan

No, you will only get 5% off unless you have 5 total subscription items.
